Soundboard: the trigger travels over the WebSocket and every client in the
call plays the clip locally, instead of mixing it into the presser's
microphone or publishing a LiveKit track. No upstream bandwidth, no media
stack changes, and the clip is not degraded by voice processing.
Fan-out uses a new sendToRoomParticipants rather than sendToRoom: the latter
broadcasts a space room to the whole space, which is right for the presence
the sidebar shows and wrong for anything audible. The cooldown is enforced
server-side — a client-side one only slows down people not trying to abuse it,
and a soundboard is the easiest thing here to turn into a weapon. Playing is
open to anyone in the call; deciding what the buttons are needs MANAGE_SPACE.
Account menu: the name in the user bar had cursor-pointer and no handler, so
the interface was already promising a click that did nothing. Offers profile,
status and copy-id — not the Clips or account switching the reference design
shows, which would be dead UI here.
Call timer: startedAt comes from the server, so a late joiner sees the call's
age rather than their own arrival. Empty space rooms are destroyed already,
which is what makes the next call start from zero — no reset logic needed.
The profile popout already existed and was reachable from eleven places —
messages, mentions, avatars, member list, DMs, activity panel — but no voice
surface opened it, so clicking someone during a call did nothing.
Wire it into the voice user rows (VoiceChannel's sidebar list) and the name
label on grid tiles, whose avatar was already a ProfileAvatar; the name beside
it not reacting read as the click failing.
Left mobile alone deliberately: MobileSpacesScreen already opens the profile
from its row wrapper, and MobileVoiceJoinSheet would layer a history-pushed
full-screen profile inside a bottom sheet, which cannot be verified here.
- Extract VolumeSliderItem to voiceMenuItems.tsx (was duplicated in
VoiceUser.tsx and VoiceChannel.tsx)
- Add e.stopPropagation() to all imperative context menu handlers
for consistency with useContextMenu hook behavior
After a server restart, navigating to a previously-visited channel showed
messages at a stale middle position instead of scrolling to the bottom.
The in-memory message cache survived the reconnect, so loadMessages()
bailed (cache hit) and the scroll-to-bottom logic never fired.
Now the ready handler clears the messages and hasMore maps for all
channels belonging to the reconnecting origin (including DMs for home).
The currently open channel is force-reloaded immediately; other channels
get fresh-fetched on next visit, triggering proper scroll-to-bottom.
Also fixes voice channel settings gear icon placement to match text
channels (flex-1 pushes icon to right edge).
The channel sidebar voice user list was maintained by a separate
voiceUsers Map (fed by WS events + fragile hydration code) that diverged
from reality after server restarts — users shown in wrong channels,
duplicated across channels. The VoiceGrid was always correct because it
reads LiveKit participants directly.
Now VoiceChannel.tsx derives its user list from LiveKit participants for
the connected channel (single source of truth) and only falls back to
server-provided voiceUsers for channels the user is not connected to.
Removed all hydration band-aids that tried to sync the two systems:
- useLiveKit ParticipantDisconnected → removeVoiceUser
- useLiveKit ConnectionStateChanged → addVoiceUser hydration loop
- useWebSocket ready handler → dynamic import LiveKit hydration
Also includes: voice channel settings gear icon on hover, persist
per-user volume/mute prefs across sessions, default screen share
audio off on Electron (no system audio capture support).
Add drag-and-drop support for moving users between voice channels
(MOVE_MEMBERS permission required). Fix voice_moved handler using
wrong user ID for federated users — now uses the same isHome/
getMyUserIdForOrigin pattern as adjacent voice handlers.
Broadcast user_updated events over WebSocket when profile fields change,
updating members, DM participants, friends, and cached messages in real time.
Widen useVoiceParticipantMeta to return the full user object and add a
standalone avatarColor prop to Avatar so all ~16 callsites now resolve
the user's chosen gradient color instead of falling back to hash-based colors.
Permission changes now take effect immediately without requiring
disconnect/reconnect. Modeled as "permission mute" parallel to
server mute — server recomputes SPEAK for all voice participants
on role/override changes and broadcasts state via WebSocket.
Includes amber UI indicators and mic toggle blocking.
Use neutral bg-white/20 for unwatched camera badge in grid tile instead
of bg-accent-rose/90, matching the local mute badge convention. Show
crossed-out camera icon in channel sidebar when a remote user's camera
is locally unwatched. Add local mute badge to both grid tile and sidebar.
Both the channel sidebar (VoiceChannel.tsx) and voice panel (VoiceUser.tsx)
now share one context menu with volume slider + conditional mod items,
eliminating duplicated portal/positioning/click-outside code from VoiceUser.
- Replaces global `userId` tracking with `spaceId:userId` composite keys across both backend and frontend, fixing the issue where server-muting a user in one space bled into others.
- Modifies client-side `ready` event hydration to merge voice states per-origin instead of completely overwriting the store, preventing federated connections from wiping out home instance mutes.
- Excludes server voice restrictions from `zustand/persist` so stale client caches don't override the server's authority on reload.
- Fixes React component reactivity by using reactive store selections for `spaceId` instead of imperative `getState()` calls, ensuring UI lockdown indicators accurately reflect the initial websocket handshake.
When a moderator server-deafens a user, the implied mute is server-imposed
and should display amber (not red) everywhere. Updated VoiceControlBar,
ChannelSidebar, VoiceChannel, and VoiceUser to check isServerDeafened
alongside isServerMuted for amber color and cursor-not-allowed state.
Also includes smart mute/deafen toggle logic (Discord-style coupling),
server-side enforcement of mute/deafen bypass, and cleanup of server
voice state on user departure.
Add ban/unban functionality with BansPanel in space settings, voice
moderation context menu (mute/deafen/disconnect), and fix federated
space settings panels to use origin-aware API client. Show domain
indicators for federated members in MembersPanel.
Store the original home snowflake ID (homeUserId) during federation replication
so that avatar gradient colors resolve identically across instances. Previously,
replicated users got new snowflake IDs on each instance, causing different
gradient colors. Now Avatar, UserProfilePopout, VoiceUser, StreamTile, and
VoiceChannel all resolve through homeUserId when available. Includes backfill
logic for existing federated users missing the field.
Federated users get a different snowflake ID on remote instances,
causing avatar gradients to mismatch their home identity. Apply
resolveDisplayIdentity/isSelf resolution in VoiceUser, StreamTile,
VoiceChannel sidebar, and MemberSidebar so the current user's avatar
color is consistent across all views.
Channel sidebar: subtle bg-surface-elevated highlight with rounded-[6px],
active channel left pill, rose unread dot on right, smaller #/voice icons
(18px), 10px horizontal padding, 24px voice user avatars at 36px indent.
Reaction bubbles: inline styles for background/border colors to bypass
Tailwind opacity modifier failures on hex CSS variables. Both mine (mint
tint) and non-mine states now render visible pill containers reliably.
Avatar fallback gradients were hashed by display name alone when no
user prop was passed, causing the same person to appear in different
colors across messages, replies, member lists, voice panels, etc.
Added userId prop to Avatar and wired it through all 17 call sites
so the gradient always hashes by user ID.
Migrate all 10 voice/video components from Discord visual language to
Aether Drift design system. Zero discord-* classes or hardcoded hex
values remain in components/voice/.
Key changes:
- Status indicators use pastel accents: mint (connected/speaking),
amber (connecting/idle), rose (muted/deafened/error)
- VoiceControlBar converted to frosted glass-bubble material
- ConnectionInfoPopover and ScreenShareSettingsPopover use glass popovers
- Speaking ring glow changed from Discord green to mint (#86efac)
- Slider accents use lavender instead of blurple
- All bg/text/border tokens mapped to surface-*/txt-*/interactive-* system
Camera and LIVE badges in the channel sidebar were only visible to users
who had joined the same LiveKit room. Widen the voice_status WS event
from {isMuted, isDeafened} to {isMuted, isDeafened, isCameraOn, isScreenSharing}
so all server members see camera/screenshare indicators without joining voice.
Streams now appear as separate tiles in the voice grid alongside the
user's camera/avatar tile, matching Discord's model. Each stream tile
has independent volume, mute, watch/unwatch controls, quality badges,
and stream attenuation that ducks audio when someone speaks.
- Add WebSocket voice_status/voice_status_update events so mute/deafen
icons are visible in the sidebar without joining the voice channel
- Server tracks voiceUserStates and includes them in the ready payload
- Re-register voice channel on WebSocket reconnect to prevent sidebar
users from disappearing after idle timeout
- Re-broadcast deafen state to late joiners via LiveKit data channel
- Fix black grid tile when video stops (enabled-flag guards)
- Remove duplicate mute/deafen from VoiceControls (replaced with
Video Quality + Noise Suppression)
- Fix missing users in sidebar voice list (identity matching + fallback)
Shift entire color palette from Discord's Ash theme to the darker Dark theme.
Redesign VoiceControlBar as floating auto-show pill, add gradient Join Voice
screen, move invite icon to server header, add voice channel user status
badges, update auth pages with subtle gradient backgrounds, and sweep all
hardcoded hex colors across 14 files to match the new darker palette.
- Fix stale message cache: add force param to loadMessages, clearAllMessages action
- Fix reload race condition: URL-based isDmChannel fallback before WS ready
- Add read_states DB table for persistent unread tracking
- Add channel_ack WS event (client→server→echo) with BigInt comparison
- Wire up unread state in chatStore (readStates, unreadChannels, ackChannel)
- Auto-ack channels on MessageList view (200ms debounced)
- Unread pill indicators on server icons in ServerSidebar
- Bold text + white dot on unread channels/DMs in ChannelSidebar
- Replace all showDms reads with data-driven isDmChannel() across 8 files
- Design system, UI polish, and component fixes from previous sessions
