Permission changes now take effect immediately without requiring
disconnect/reconnect. Modeled as "permission mute" parallel to
server mute — server recomputes SPEAK for all voice participants
on role/override changes and broadcasts state via WebSocket.
Includes amber UI indicators and mic toggle blocking.
Split monolithic UserSettings into AccountPanel, VoicePanel, ConnectionsPanel,
and InstancePanel tabs. Remove standalone InstanceSettings modal. Add reusable
Toggle component fixing size deformation, color inconsistency (green→purple),
and flex-shrink issues. Fix custom status clearing by always sending the field
to the server. Wrap Log Out button in glass bubble. Add subtle card depth with
borders.
Use neutral bg-white/20 for unwatched camera badge in grid tile instead
of bg-accent-rose/90, matching the local mute badge convention. Show
crossed-out camera icon in channel sidebar when a remote user's camera
is locally unwatched. Add local mute badge to both grid tile and sidebar.
Add ability to unsubscribe from remote camera tracks via context menu,
with unwatched state tracked in voiceStore. Fix click propagation through
React portals by adding onClick stopPropagation alongside onMouseDown on
both the main context menu and MoveToSubmenu flyout portal containers.
Use rose badge color for unwatched cameras (user choice) instead of amber
(reserved for server-enforced states).
When a second browser joins voice, LiveKit disconnects the first browser
via identity collision. The first browser's leaveVoice() was optimistically
removing the user from voiceUsers, but the user is still in voice from
the other session. Add handleForceDisconnect() that clears local connection
state without touching voiceUsers, keeping the sidebar accurate.
Also fix deploy.sh to clean up stale renamed containers from failed recreates.
getMyUserIdForOrigin relied on instanceStore resolver which could return
the home user ID during connection errors. Cache the authoritative user
ID directly from the WS ready payload, ensuring effective-state
computations use the correct federated identity.
When a moderator lifted a server mute/deafen, the client was involuntarily
turning on the user's microphone because isMuted/isDeafened conflated user
intent with server enforcement. Now intent (isMuted/isDeafened) is never
mutated by server events. Effective state (intent || serverEnforcement) is
computed at broadcast and hardware time via centralized helpers.
- The client now dynamically resolves the user's federated identity via `getMyUserIdForOrigin` when evaluating incoming `voice_server_muted` and `voice_server_deafened` events. Previously, the client incorrectly compared the remote event's federated `userId` against the local `authStore` home `userId`, causing federated users to silently drop restriction events.
- Client-side mic/deafen toggles (`toggleMic`, `toggleDeafen`) now accurately evaluate the user's origin-specific ID against the restriction sets, preventing federated users from bypassing locks.
- UI state selectors (`VoiceControlBar`, `ChannelSidebar`) now compute `myOriginId` to correctly render the yellow server-lockdown indicators for cross-instance users.
- Replaces global `userId` tracking with `spaceId:userId` composite keys across both backend and frontend, fixing the issue where server-muting a user in one space bled into others.
- Modifies client-side `ready` event hydration to merge voice states per-origin instead of completely overwriting the store, preventing federated connections from wiping out home instance mutes.
- Excludes server voice restrictions from `zustand/persist` so stale client caches don't override the server's authority on reload.
- Fixes React component reactivity by using reactive store selections for `spaceId` instead of imperative `getState()` calls, ensuring UI lockdown indicators accurately reflect the initial websocket handshake.
Server-side: add DB persistence for voice restrictions (schema, migration,
ready payload, cleanup on leave). Client-side: fix four bugs that wiped or
bypassed server restriction state — leaveVoice() no longer clears global
restriction Sets, voice_state_update leave no longer drops amber icons,
toggleMic/toggleDeafen now guard against server restrictions, and force-mute/
deafen uses direct setState instead of fragile toggle calls.
When a moderator server-deafens a user, the implied mute is server-imposed
and should display amber (not red) everywhere. Updated VoiceControlBar,
ChannelSidebar, VoiceChannel, and VoiceUser to check isServerDeafened
alongside isServerMuted for amber color and cursor-not-allowed state.
Also includes smart mute/deafen toggle logic (Discord-style coupling),
server-side enforcement of mute/deafen bypass, and cleanup of server
voice state on user departure.
Add ban/unban functionality with BansPanel in space settings, voice
moderation context menu (mute/deafen/disconnect), and fix federated
space settings panels to use origin-aware API client. Show domain
indicators for federated members in MembersPanel.
- Redesign explore cards with banner images, overlapping icons, and frosted fade
- Extract dominant colors from space icons for dynamic banner gradients
- Add space description/banner fields to schema with migration
- Move origin label from banner overlay to content metadata row
- Support space descriptions in settings overview panel
fetchSpaces() now awaits _autoConnectDone before reading the instance
list, preventing a race where it would fetch with an empty/incomplete
set of connected instances during page reload.
Move instance-level administration out of Space Settings into its own
modal. Adds admin UI for instance name, registration toggle, and
discovery toggle. Streaming limits panel relocated from SpaceSettings.
- Add InstanceAdminSettings type and GET/PATCH /api/settings/instance
- Add registration_open DB column (nullable, env var fallback)
- Auth registration and instance info now check DB override
- New InstanceSettings modal with General and Streaming tabs
- Admin shield button in UserAreaPanel (visible to admins only)
- Remove Streaming tab from SpaceSettings
Fix three federation bugs in Space Settings: icon URL was double-wrapped
through home API, upload targeted home instance instead of remote, and
updateSpace used home API client. Also restyle settings panels (User,
Space, Members, Roles, Connected Instances) with consistent section
headers, grouped cards, and improved layout.
- Accept visibility and description fields when creating spaces
- Register creator in connectionManager on space creation for immediate WS broadcasts
- Return per-channel myPermissions and space-level myPermissions from GET /spaces/:id
- Populate permission maps in spaceStore from REST response
- Add reauthenticateInstance flow for tokenless federation placeholders
- Handle expired/missing tokens gracefully in autoConnectAll with visible error state
- Guard syncInstanceList against premature runs before autoConnectAll completes
Use origin-aware user ID resolution for optimistic voice add/remove
instead of always using the home instance ID. Adds getMyUserIdForOrigin
resolver (same pattern as getApiForOrigin) so joinVoiceChannel and
leaveVoice use the correct federated user ID. Also fixes WS reconnect
voice re-registration, invite URL for remote servers, and chatStore
early-load guard for unmapped channels.
The redirect effect used the shared `channels` array which could contain
stale data from a previously viewed server during async loadServerDetail.
Added channelToServerMap ownership check to ensure channels belong to
the target server before redirecting. Also persists last-visited channel
per server in localStorage for better return navigation.
The Explore page shared /channels/@me with Friends, differentiated by a
showExplore UI flag. When PiP navigated to a voice channel, the stale
flag caused MainContent to render text chat instead of the voice grid.
Replace the flag with a dedicated /explore route so the URL is the
single source of truth.
Joined discoverable servers now appear in a collapsible "Joined" section
at the bottom of the explore page, so the page never feels dead when all
servers have been joined. A mint success banner replaces the old empty
state text.
Previously, the voice channel sidebar only showed users after a server
round-trip (voice_state_update broadcast). After a deploy/reconnect,
this left the user invisible in the sidebar despite being connected.
Now joinVoiceChannel, leaveVoice, and the WS ready handler all
optimistically update voiceUsers for the local user immediately.
Clear stale currentChannelId when clicking Explore/DMs in ServerSidebar,
and guard AppLayout route effect from clobbering showExplore. Move member
exclusion into SQL for correct pagination/totals, surface allSettled errors,
and show context-aware empty state messages.
Replace the unreliable client-side DM dedup loop in populateFromReady with
a creation-time guard (findExistingDmForUser) that checks all instances
before opening a new DM. Guards added to FriendsPage, NewDmModal, and
UserProfilePopout.
Also fixes: corrupted read_states from temp_ optimistic message IDs (server
migration + client-side validation), federation-aware closeDm/addDmMember
API routing, isSelf-based DM member filtering in sidebar/header, and WS
event error isolation.
- Fix DM welcome header avatar using home identity for correct gradient color
- Register DM channel IDs in channelOriginMap so federated DM operations
(reactions, messages, typing) route to the correct instance
- Pass origin when creating DM channels from friends list and WS events
- Add server discovery/explore page with public server listings
- Add server visibility and description fields
Rewrites socialStore to aggregate friends and requests from all connected
instances using Promise.allSettled. Parses user@domain in friend requests
to route to the correct instance. Removes !isHome guards on social WS
events so remote friend requests arrive in real-time. Shows "via hostname"
labels on remote friends/requests in the UI.
Store the original home snowflake ID (homeUserId) during federation replication
so that avatar gradient colors resolve identically across instances. Previously,
replicated users got new snowflake IDs on each instance, causing different
gradient colors. Now Avatar, UserProfilePopout, VoiceUser, StreamTile, and
VoiceChannel all resolve through homeUserId when available. Includes backfill
logic for existing federated users missing the field.
Add identity.ts with isSelf() and resolveDisplayIdentity() — pure
stateless functions that detect replicated-self using the immutable
(username, homeInstance) composite key. No store lookups, no data
mutation. Fixes wrong avatar gradient and missing edit/delete on
own messages in remote channels.
Also includes: optimistic message dedup fix for cross-instance
messages (content-only matching), federation toast notifications,
Username component with @domain display, invite parser, and
deploy script simplification.
Batch 1 — Bug fixes:
- Fix stale voice state on remote reconnect (clearVoiceUsersForOrigin)
- Fix logout not cleaning remote servers from store
- Fix reply-to asset normalization for remote messages
- Fix HTTPS hardcoded in autoConnectAll (store full origin, legacy fallback)
Batch 2 — Password enforcement + replication flow:
- Add connectToRemote() with home password verification before remote auth
- Auto-cascade: verify home password → register on remote → login fallback
- Replace Register/Login tabs with single password field in ConnectedInstances
- Add DifferentPasswordError for typed fallback-login UI transition
- Fallback login form shown only when remote has different password
Phase 5 of multi-instance federation. Adds a two-layer fix:
Layer 1 — Data ingestion normalization: Remote instance user avatars,
server icons, and attachment filenames are rewritten to absolute URLs
when entering the app (via WebSocket events or API responses), so all
downstream components render them correctly without changes.
Layer 2 — Outbound action routing: wsSend calls (voice join/leave/status,
typing) and file uploads in UI components now route through the correct
instance based on the active channel's origin.
Two fixes addressing architectural review feedback:
1. Snowflake ID collisions: Replace process.pid-based worker ID with a
cryptographically random value (0-1023) generated once at first boot
and persisted to instance_settings.worker_id. Eliminates deterministic
ID collisions between Docker instances that all run as PID 1.
2. Reaction API leak: Revert addReaction/removeReaction signatures to
(messageId, emoji) — the store now resolves the channel internally by
scanning its message cache, keeping routing logic out of the UI layer.
Refactor the WebSocket layer from a singleton connection to a connection
map supporting N concurrent instances. Each connection has its own
heartbeat worker, reconnect state, and token. Stores are now
instance-aware: serverStore merges servers by origin, chatStore routes
API calls through the correct client, and instanceStore triggers WS
connect/disconnect on add/remove. DM, social, and voice events remain
home-only.
Introduce instanceStore (Zustand) with full federation lifecycle:
probe remote instances, register with username collision fallback,
login to existing accounts, sync instance list across all connected
instances, auto-reconnect from cached tokens on login/page load, and
cleanup on logout. Add ConnectedInstances component to User Settings
with home instance card, remote instance management, and inline
add-instance flow (URL probe → register/login → connected).
PiP positioning:
- Replace hardcoded layout constants with dynamic DOM measurement system
- Obstacle elements declare themselves via data-pip-obstacle="left|bottom"
- getPipBounds() queries actual element rects at runtime via getBoundingClientRect
- MutationObserver + ResizeObserver re-clamp PiP when obstacles appear/resize
- PiP reappears after close when navigating away from voice channel
Reactions:
- Align reaction pills with Aether Drift prototype
- Own-reaction accent: purple → mint (bg, border, count color)
- Default pills: subtle white overlay bg + border-soft border
- Count text: 12px/semibold/txt-secondary per prototype spec
Bug fix:
- Deduplicate channel insertion in createChannel store action
- Prevents double-add race between REST response and WS broadcast
- Add Backspace-design-prototype.html: finalized "Aether Drift" design
language with warm matte surfaces and subtle frosted glass accents
- Update CLAUDE.md with DESIGN SYSTEM section and remove Discord clone references
- Rename all Opencord references to Backspace across the full codebase
- Archive outdated design experiments and Discord-specific assets
- Add science-backed accessibility fallback (prefers-reduced-transparency)
Add a server-side instance_settings table (single-row, CHECK(id=1))
that stores admin-configurable streaming bounds: bitrate min/max/step,
allowed resolutions, and allowed framerates.
Backend:
- New instance_settings schema + migrations (is_admin on users, default
settings row, first-registered-user promoted to admin)
- GET/PATCH /api/settings/streaming endpoints with admin-only writes
and full input validation including cross-field checks
Frontend:
- settingsStore fetches limits on WebSocket ready, exposes isAdmin flag
- ScreenShareSettingsPopover reads bounds from store instead of
hardcoded constants, auto-clamps stale localStorage values
- buildScreenShareOptions() clamps bitrate to server limits at build
time as enforcement backstop
- ServerSettings modal gains a "Streaming" tab (admin-only) with
bitrate range sliders, resolution/framerate toggles, and save/reset
- Add customBitrateKbps to ScreenShareConfig (null = auto matrix lookup)
- Slider in Stream Settings popover: 500 kbps–20 Mbps, step 500 kbps
- "Reset to Auto" clears override back to preset-derived bitrate
- Live updates via existing applyOverdrive() pipeline on active streams
- Persist version 5 → 6 with migration
Wire the bitwise permission engine end-to-end:
- Add sendToChannel() to ConnectionManager, filtering WS recipients by VIEW_CHANNEL
- Convert 6 channel-scoped events (messages, typing, reactions) from sendToServer to sendToChannel
- Add broadcastOverrideChange() to push channel_updated/channel_deleted per-user on override mutations
- Bridge legacy server_members.role TEXT to member_roles junction table on PATCH
- Add pushReadyPayload() to force re-sync frontend store after role changes
- Filter channels by VIEW_CHANNEL in GET /api/servers/:id to prevent initial load data leak
- Pre-compute viewers before CASCADE delete on channel_deleted
- Fix frontend channel event handlers to upsert/cleanup channelToServerMap and channelPermissions
- Add ChannelSettingsModal with Private Channel toggle and gear icon in ChannelSidebar
Replace string-based role checks (role === 'admin') with a bitwise BigInt
permission system. Adds computePermissions() resolution engine following
Discord's model: @everyone base → role union → admin shortcut → channel
overrides (role deny/allow → member deny/allow). Ready payload now filters
channels by VIEW_CHANNEL and attaches per-user myPermissions to each
server and channel. Includes channel_overrides table, @everyone role
auto-creation, migration for existing servers, and override CRUD API.
Wrap all multi-write DB operations in atomic transactions (server/channel
creation, message+attachment linking, DM creation, friend acceptance,
cascading deletes) to prevent partial-write corruption.
Batch N+1 queries in WS ready payload into O(1) bulk fetches with
chunked inArray() to respect SQLite's variable limit.
Fix chat history regression where background WS messages bypassed
channel load by switching the guard from messages.has() to hasMore.has().
Add LRU channel eviction (20 cached, evict to 15) and per-channel
message cap (200) to bound client memory growth.
Shorten WS heartbeat from 30s to 15s for aggressive proxy/NAT
environments. Clear all user-scoped stores on logout to prevent
cross-session data leaks.
Extract LiveKit internal accessors into shared livekitInternals utility.
Replace rigid SCREEN_QUALITY_MAP (6 hardcoded VideoPreset strings) with a
builder function that computes bitrate, degradation preference, and content
hint from three independent axes (height, fps, content mode). Camera is
decoupled onto a fixed 720p30 preset so screen share changes no longer
affect camera quality. New ScreenShareSettingsPopover replaces the old
VideoQualityPopover with pill-style selectors. Store migrated to v5 with
backwards-compatible migration from videoQuality string.
DM uploads silently failed because the 5-point chain (types, frontend,
POST, GET, WS broadcast) was never wired for attachments. Added
buildDmMessageWithUser/getDmMessageWithUser helpers mirroring the server
channel pattern, and plumbed attachmentIds + replyToId through all DM
code paths.
Unlock group DMs by removing the 2-member assumption across the stack.
No schema migration needed — dm_members junction table already supports
N members. Includes dedup bug fix, add/leave member endpoints, late-join
call support, group-aware sidebar rendering, and AddDmMemberModal.
Camera and LIVE badges in the channel sidebar were only visible to users
who had joined the same LiveKit room. Widen the voice_status WS event
from {isMuted, isDeafened} to {isMuted, isDeafened, isCameraOn, isScreenSharing}
so all server members see camera/screenshare indicators without joining voice.
Eliminate double-state architecture (useState → useEffect bridge → store)
that lost speaking events due to React 18 batching. ActiveSpeakersChanged
now writes speakingParticipantIds directly to voiceStore; 200ms poll
catches missed SDK events. Each VoiceUser subscribes to its own identity
via fine-grained selector for minimal re-renders. Also adds connection
quality indicator and ConnectionInfoPopover.
