Add avatarColor field to spaces, matching the user avatar color system.
Spaces get a random color on creation and owners can change it in space
settings. The color controls the fallback gradient when no icon is uploaded,
replacing the old deterministic hash-based gradient. Includes full
federation support, explore page, mutual spaces, and color picker in both
create and settings modals.
Enforce lowercase usernames at registration/login, migrate existing
usernames, and fix ownership checks for federated spaces by resolving
user identity per-instance with getMyUserIdForOrigin.
- Use custom Tooltip on all space sidebar items instead of browser title
- Add transferOwnership action to spaceStore (federation-aware)
- Add "Transfer Ownership" context menu item for space owners
- Add TransferOwnershipModal with member search and confirmation
- Add transfer ownership option in SpaceSettings > Danger Zone
Use getMyUserIdForOrigin() in leaveSpace() so federated spaces send
the correct remote user ID instead of the home ID. Show context menu
for all spaces with "Invite People" action; "Leave Space" only for
non-owners.
Replace ContextMenu wrapper with a single portal-based SpaceContextMenu
that renders via createPortal to document.body. Fixes pill indicator
positioning, menu overflow clipping, multiple-menu-open bugs, and
inconsistent DOM structure between owner/non-owner spaces. Also normalize
federated space icons in addSpaceFromReady() for discovery page joins.
- Add fileCleanup utility to delete uploaded files from disk on message/account deletion
- Add migration to clean orphaned DM channels, attachments, reactions, read states, and stale moderator refs
- Add FK constraints on dm_message_id in attachments and dm_reactions schema
- Make bans.bannedBy and voiceRestrictions.moderatorId nullable for deleted moderators
- Transfer group DM ownership on member leave or account deletion
- Fully clean up orphaned DM channels (zero members) including files
- Add "Leave Group" context menu for group DMs in ChannelSidebar
- Add leaveDm action to spaceStore
- Add account deletion with tombstone (isDeleted flag), password/username
confirmation, owned-space guard, and full cleanup transaction
- Free deleted usernames by renaming to !deleted:<id> so they can be reused
- Add migration to retroactively free usernames from already-tombstoned users
- Add GET /api/auth/check-username endpoint with rate limiting for real-time
availability checking during registration
- Add debounced username availability indicator on registration Step 1
- Add DeleteAccountModal with federation-aware remote account cleanup
- Add federation ops utility for remote instance management
- Update sanitizeUser to anonymize deleted user profiles
- Add instance store improvements and connected instances modal updates
Refactor RegisterPage into a two-step flow: credentials first, then
personalization (display name, avatar upload, avatar color). Replace the
dual-panel sliding layout with conditional rendering and CSS keyframe
animations to eliminate overflow-hidden clipping of focus rings.
Supporting changes:
- Server accepts avatarColor on registration
- Auth store resets all user-scoped stores on login/register/logout
- Voice store gains resetSession() for full session cleanup
- Sync presence status to federated instances
- Propagate presence_update to socialStore regardless of origin
Federated users (e.g. youruser@nova browsing orbit) could not add
instances via Settings → Connections because connectToRemote assumed
window.location.host was the home instance, producing a double-@ username
like youruser@nova.ddns.net@orbit.ddns.net that failed server
validation. Now derives trueHomeHost/bareUsername/trueHomeUserId from the
user's actual homeInstance fields and branches the auth flow: login-only
with bare username when targeting home, register with correct namespacing
for third-party remotes. Also skips profile sync to home instance since
it's the source of truth.
Broadcast user_updated events over WebSocket when profile fields change,
updating members, DM participants, friends, and cached messages in real time.
Widen useVoiceParticipantMeta to return the full user object and add a
standalone avatarColor prop to Avatar so all ~16 callsites now resolve
the user's chosen gradient color instead of falling back to hash-based colors.
Remove placeholder buttons (Threads, Inbox, Help) from channel and DM
headers. Add full-text message search with backend endpoints for both
space channels and DMs, supporting filters (from, has, before, after)
and pagination. Search popover with debounced input, highlighted matches,
and jump-to-message that scrolls with a highlight animation. Includes
messages/around endpoints for loading context when jumping to uncached
messages.
Add server-side heartbeat using RFC 6455 protocol-level ping/pong frames
to detect abruptly disconnected clients (e.g. PC shutdown without TCP FIN).
Dead connections are terminated within ~65s, triggering the existing
cleanup chain to remove ghost users from voice channels and presence.
Add flex to speaking ring wrapper divs in VoiceUser and PictureInPicture
to eliminate baseline descender space that made the ring oval. Extract
useVoiceParticipantMeta hook to resolve real display names and avatars
for voice participants instead of showing raw usernames with null avatars.
Add showAt prop to Username component and use it in both UserProfilePopout
and UserProfileModal to consistently display @username for all users.
Also move avatar ring styling into Avatar component's ring prop.
Replace element-level opacity on banner fallback divs with rgba-based
gradient color stops via new mutedGradient() utility. This prevents
compositing layer artifacts that caused visible color seams at the
banner boundary in AccountPanel, UserProfilePopout, and UserProfileModal.
Move bg-surface-channel from info section to card wrapper in AccountPanel
so the avatar's negative margin overlaps into the banner correctly. Replace
accent color presets with 7×3 banner color palette, remove accent color
tinting from display names in popout/modal, and refactor gradient entries
to expose from/to hex stops.
Replace the hardcoded 16-color ACCENT_PRESETS array in AccountPanel with
a shared export from gradients.ts that extracts both hex stops from each
avatar gradient, producing 14 harmonized colors in a 7×2 grid.
Add avatarColor as a stored, user-selectable field (mint, sky, lavender,
coral, rose, teal, amber). Randomly assigned on registration, changeable
in profile settings. Existing users keep hash-based fallback until they
choose a color. Includes DB migration, API validation, gradient map,
live preview in settings, and banner fallback integration.
Friends/requests were only loaded when FriendsPage or ActivityPanel rendered,
so profile modals in space views always showed "Add Friend" even for existing
friends. Now loadFriends/loadRequests fire on every WS ready event.
Also adds canonicalUserMatch() with cascading ID/homeUserId/username+instance
fallback, replacing fragile homeUserId-only matching in getFriendshipStatus.
Space avatars in the mutual spaces tab now use getSpaceGradient() instead of
a flat grey background, matching the sidebar appearance. Mutual friends and
spaces from remote instances show a globe icon with the instance hostname.
Also wires up federated mutuals loading, correct API client routing for
remote user profiles, and the new mutuals utility.
Add banner image, accent color, and bio fields to user profiles with
full-stack support: schema migration, API validation (hex color format,
190-char bio limit), sanitizeUser propagation, and new GET /users/:id/mutuals
endpoint. Rewrite AccountPanel with live preview card, avatar/banner upload
via ImageCropModal, 16-preset accent color picker, and bio editor. Enhance
UserProfilePopout with banner display, accent-colored names, bio rendering,
and mutual counts. Add new UserProfileModal with About/Mutual Friends/Mutual
Spaces tabs and friend action buttons.
Space icon in Settings → Overview was using the user Avatar component
(wrong palette + hashed on name), now uses getSpaceGradient(id, name)
to match the sidebar.
Remove the unused USE_VOICE_ACTIVITY permission bit (was bit 25) and shift
STREAM to bit 25, DISCONNECT_MEMBERS to bit 26. Add a database migration to
remap stored permission values. Gate camera and screen share buttons in
VoiceControlBar behind canSpeak/canStream, matching VoiceControls behavior.
Permission changes now take effect immediately without requiring
disconnect/reconnect. Modeled as "permission mute" parallel to
server mute — server recomputes SPEAK for all voice participants
on role/override changes and broadcasts state via WebSocket.
Includes amber UI indicators and mic toggle blocking.
Split monolithic UserSettings into AccountPanel, VoicePanel, ConnectionsPanel,
and InstancePanel tabs. Remove standalone InstanceSettings modal. Add reusable
Toggle component fixing size deformation, color inconsistency (green→purple),
and flex-shrink issues. Fix custom status clearing by always sending the field
to the server. Wrap Log Out button in glass bubble. Add subtle card depth with
borders.
Use neutral bg-white/20 for unwatched camera badge in grid tile instead
of bg-accent-rose/90, matching the local mute badge convention. Show
crossed-out camera icon in channel sidebar when a remote user's camera
is locally unwatched. Add local mute badge to both grid tile and sidebar.
Add ability to unsubscribe from remote camera tracks via context menu,
with unwatched state tracked in voiceStore. Fix click propagation through
React portals by adding onClick stopPropagation alongside onMouseDown on
both the main context menu and MoveToSubmenu flyout portal containers.
Use rose badge color for unwatched cameras (user choice) instead of amber
(reserved for server-enforced states).
- Add DISCONNECT_MEMBERS permission (bit 27) to disconnect users from voice
- Implement voice_disconnect WebSocket handler with permission checks
- Add disconnect button to voice user context menu
- Grant instance admins full permissions across all spaces
- Fix voice_disconnected handler to use federation-aware identity resolution
- Update CLAUDE.md with new event types and permission docs
Both the channel sidebar (VoiceChannel.tsx) and voice panel (VoiceUser.tsx)
now share one context menu with volume slider + conditional mod items,
eliminating duplicated portal/positioning/click-outside code from VoiceUser.
Replace the flat channel list with a single "Move to" trigger that opens
a cascading flyout on hover, preventing the menu from bloating vertically
when many voice channels exist.
Replace hardcoded Tailwind grid-cols breakpoints with a container-aware
layout algorithm that uses ResizeObserver to recompute optimal tile
arrangement. Maximizes tile area while maintaining 16:9 aspect ratio,
automatically adapting when VoiceChatPanel opens/closes, window resizes,
or fullscreen is toggled.
When a second browser joins voice, LiveKit disconnects the first browser
via identity collision. The first browser's leaveVoice() was optimistically
removing the user from voiceUsers, but the user is still in voice from
the other session. Add handleForceDisconnect() that clears local connection
state without touching voiceUsers, keeping the sidebar accurate.
Also fix deploy.sh to clean up stale renamed containers from failed recreates.
Add isServerDeafened to mic icon slash conditions in VoiceControlBar and
ChannelSidebar. Restructure VoiceUser badge rendering to gate on effective
state (intent OR server enforcement) instead of only LiveKit participant
intent, fixing missing badges in the voice grid for server-muted users.
- Add migration to convert legacy JSON array permissions to decimal strings
- Add runtime fallback in stringToPermissions for legacy format
- Show all permission toggles as enabled (dimmed) when Administrator is on
getMyUserIdForOrigin relied on instanceStore resolver which could return
the home user ID during connection errors. Cache the authoritative user
ID directly from the WS ready payload, ensuring effective-state
computations use the correct federated identity.
When a moderator lifted a server mute/deafen, the client was involuntarily
turning on the user's microphone because isMuted/isDeafened conflated user
intent with server enforcement. Now intent (isMuted/isDeafened) is never
mutated by server events. Effective state (intent || serverEnforcement) is
computed at broadcast and hardware time via centralized helpers.
- The client now dynamically resolves the user's federated identity via `getMyUserIdForOrigin` when evaluating incoming `voice_server_muted` and `voice_server_deafened` events. Previously, the client incorrectly compared the remote event's federated `userId` against the local `authStore` home `userId`, causing federated users to silently drop restriction events.
- Client-side mic/deafen toggles (`toggleMic`, `toggleDeafen`) now accurately evaluate the user's origin-specific ID against the restriction sets, preventing federated users from bypassing locks.
- UI state selectors (`VoiceControlBar`, `ChannelSidebar`) now compute `myOriginId` to correctly render the yellow server-lockdown indicators for cross-instance users.
- Replaces global `userId` tracking with `spaceId:userId` composite keys across both backend and frontend, fixing the issue where server-muting a user in one space bled into others.
- Modifies client-side `ready` event hydration to merge voice states per-origin instead of completely overwriting the store, preventing federated connections from wiping out home instance mutes.
- Excludes server voice restrictions from `zustand/persist` so stale client caches don't override the server's authority on reload.
- Fixes React component reactivity by using reactive store selections for `spaceId` instead of imperative `getState()` calls, ensuring UI lockdown indicators accurately reflect the initial websocket handshake.
- Client ready handler now builds restriction Sets atomically in a single
setState call, eliminating intermediate empty-Set state that caused amber
icons to flash rose on reload
- buildReadyPayload queries all voice restrictions from DB across the
user's spaces instead of relying on in-memory state (which is lost on
disconnect timeout)
- voice_join early-return path now re-broadcasts restrictions to the
reconnecting user, covering fast reload where the user is still in the room
Server-side: add DB persistence for voice restrictions (schema, migration,
ready payload, cleanup on leave). Client-side: fix four bugs that wiped or
bypassed server restriction state — leaveVoice() no longer clears global
restriction Sets, voice_state_update leave no longer drops amber icons,
toggleMic/toggleDeafen now guard against server restrictions, and force-mute/
deafen uses direct setState instead of fragile toggle calls.
When a moderator server-deafens a user, the implied mute is server-imposed
and should display amber (not red) everywhere. Updated VoiceControlBar,
ChannelSidebar, VoiceChannel, and VoiceUser to check isServerDeafened
alongside isServerMuted for amber color and cursor-not-allowed state.
Also includes smart mute/deafen toggle logic (Discord-style coupling),
server-side enforcement of mute/deafen bypass, and cleanup of server
voice state on user departure.
Add ban/unban functionality with BansPanel in space settings, voice
moderation context menu (mute/deafen/disconnect), and fix federated
space settings panels to use origin-aware API client. Show domain
indicators for federated members in MembersPanel.
Replace truncated text labels with globe pill dividers and add
federation badges to remote space icons. Remote spaces now show
rich Tooltips with "SpaceName · host" instead of native title attrs.
Disconnected instances display amber warning indicators throughout.
- Redesign explore cards with banner images, overlapping icons, and frosted fade
- Extract dominant colors from space icons for dynamic banner gradients
- Add space description/banner fields to schema with migration
- Move origin label from banner overlay to content metadata row
- Support space descriptions in settings overview panel
fetchSpaces() now awaits _autoConnectDone before reading the instance
list, preventing a race where it would fetch with an empty/incomplete
set of connected instances during page reload.
Move instance-level administration out of Space Settings into its own
modal. Adds admin UI for instance name, registration toggle, and
discovery toggle. Streaming limits panel relocated from SpaceSettings.
- Add InstanceAdminSettings type and GET/PATCH /api/settings/instance
- Add registration_open DB column (nullable, env var fallback)
- Auth registration and instance info now check DB override
- New InstanceSettings modal with General and Streaming tabs
- Admin shield button in UserAreaPanel (visible to admins only)
- Remove Streaming tab from SpaceSettings
Fix three federation bugs in Space Settings: icon URL was double-wrapped
through home API, upload targeted home instance instead of remote, and
updateSpace used home API client. Also restyle settings panels (User,
Space, Members, Roles, Connected Instances) with consistent section
headers, grouped cards, and improved layout.
Replace inline Save/Discard/Reset buttons with sticky glass-bubble pills
that float at the bottom of scrollable modal content. Make SpaceSettings
tab sidebar sticky with glass material. Convert RoleEditView "Back to
roles" into a sticky glass pill at the top. UserSettings Log Out + Save
always visible in a glass pill with separator. Also includes floating
position hook and popover/tooltip improvements from prior work.
Restructure SpaceSettings modal from 778-line monolith into thin
orchestrator with extracted panel components. Add full role CRUD with
permission editor (create, edit name/color/permissions, delete).
Backend: expose role permissions in GET response, accept permissions
in POST/PATCH role endpoints with BigInt validation, broadcast
pushReadyPayload to all space members on role mutations.
Wire react-easy-crop into CreateSpace so users can crop and zoom before
uploading a space icon. Adds reusable ImageCropModal component and
canvas crop utility for future use in space settings and avatar editing.
- Accept visibility and description fields when creating spaces
- Register creator in connectionManager on space creation for immediate WS broadcasts
- Return per-channel myPermissions and space-level myPermissions from GET /spaces/:id
- Populate permission maps in spaceStore from REST response
- Add reauthenticateInstance flow for tokenless federation placeholders
- Handle expired/missing tokens gracefully in autoConnectAll with visible error state
- Guard syncInstanceList against premature runs before autoConnectAll completes
Remove disabled={isUploading} from the textarea so focus() isn't silently
ignored on a disabled element. Fix ResizeObserver effect deps so the
observer is actually created after the loading spinner transitions to
message content.
Use origin-aware user ID resolution for optimistic voice add/remove
instead of always using the home instance ID. Adds getMyUserIdForOrigin
resolver (same pattern as getApiForOrigin) so joinVoiceChannel and
leaveVoice use the correct federated user ID. Also fixes WS reconnect
voice re-registration, invite URL for remote servers, and chatStore
early-load guard for unmapped channels.
The redirect effect used the shared `channels` array which could contain
stale data from a previously viewed server during async loadServerDetail.
Added channelToServerMap ownership check to ensure channels belong to
the target server before redirecting. Also persists last-visited channel
per server in localStorage for better return navigation.
The Explore page shared /channels/@me with Friends, differentiated by a
showExplore UI flag. When PiP navigated to a voice channel, the stale
flag caused MainContent to render text chat instead of the voice grid.
Replace the flag with a dedicated /explore route so the URL is the
single source of truth.
Joined discoverable servers now appear in a collapsible "Joined" section
at the bottom of the explore page, so the page never feels dead when all
servers have been joined. A mint success banner replaces the old empty
state text.
$client doesn't exist in drizzle-orm 0.33, causing a TypeError and
500 on every /api/servers/explore request. Export the raw better-sqlite3
instance directly from db/index.ts instead.
The echo gate architecture bypassed the serialized mic management chain
and introduced race conditions. Chrome's AEC handles echo properly for
both headphone and speaker users without custom intervention.
Send voice_join to WS server only after LiveKit successfully connects,
not immediately on joinVoiceChannel() or WS reconnect. Background tabs
can reconnect WebSocket but not WebRTC, causing phantom voice users.
Previously, the voice channel sidebar only showed users after a server
round-trip (voice_state_update broadcast). After a deploy/reconnect,
this left the user invisible in the sidebar despite being connected.
Now joinVoiceChannel, leaveVoice, and the WS ready handler all
optimistically update voiceUsers for the local user immediately.
Clear stale currentChannelId when clicking Explore/DMs in ServerSidebar,
and guard AppLayout route effect from clobbering showExplore. Move member
exclusion into SQL for correct pagination/totals, surface allSettled errors,
and show context-aware empty state messages.
Send explicit voice_leave to the old instance when joining voice on a
different origin, preventing stale voice state from showing the user in
two channels. Also make WS reconnect voice re-registration origin-aware
so remote reconnects properly restore voice state.
Replace the unreliable client-side DM dedup loop in populateFromReady with
a creation-time guard (findExistingDmForUser) that checks all instances
before opening a new DM. Guards added to FriendsPage, NewDmModal, and
UserProfilePopout.
Also fixes: corrupted read_states from temp_ optimistic message IDs (server
migration + client-side validation), federation-aware closeDm/addDmMember
API routing, isSelf-based DM member filtering in sidebar/header, and WS
event error isolation.
- Fix DM welcome header avatar using home identity for correct gradient color
- Register DM channel IDs in channelOriginMap so federated DM operations
(reactions, messages, typing) route to the correct instance
- Pass origin when creating DM channels from friends list and WS events
- Add server discovery/explore page with public server listings
- Add server visibility and description fields
Rewrites socialStore to aggregate friends and requests from all connected
instances using Promise.allSettled. Parses user@domain in friend requests
to route to the correct instance. Removes !isHome guards on social WS
events so remote friend requests arrive in real-time. Shows "via hostname"
labels on remote friends/requests in the UI.
Store the original home snowflake ID (homeUserId) during federation replication
so that avatar gradient colors resolve identically across instances. Previously,
replicated users got new snowflake IDs on each instance, causing different
gradient colors. Now Avatar, UserProfilePopout, VoiceUser, StreamTile, and
VoiceChannel all resolve through homeUserId when available. Includes backfill
logic for existing federated users missing the field.
Federated users get a different snowflake ID on remote instances,
causing avatar gradients to mismatch their home identity. Apply
resolveDisplayIdentity/isSelf resolution in VoiceUser, StreamTile,
VoiceChannel sidebar, and MemberSidebar so the current user's avatar
color is consistent across all views.
Move TypingIndicator from document flow (between MessageList and
MessageInput) into MessageInput's outer wrapper using absolute
bottom-full positioning. Fixes indicator being hidden behind the
floating glass input bubble on desktop.
- Include user object in reaction_added WS broadcasts for isSelf() resolution
- Use isSelf() instead of userId comparison for reaction ownership checks
- Load remote server detail after ready event to prevent empty channel list
Add identity.ts with isSelf() and resolveDisplayIdentity() — pure
stateless functions that detect replicated-self using the immutable
(username, homeInstance) composite key. No store lookups, no data
mutation. Fixes wrong avatar gradient and missing edit/delete on
own messages in remote channels.
Also includes: optimistic message dedup fix for cross-instance
messages (content-only matching), federation toast notifications,
Username component with @domain display, invite parser, and
deploy script simplification.
Batch 1 — Bug fixes:
- Fix stale voice state on remote reconnect (clearVoiceUsersForOrigin)
- Fix logout not cleaning remote servers from store
- Fix reply-to asset normalization for remote messages
- Fix HTTPS hardcoded in autoConnectAll (store full origin, legacy fallback)
Batch 2 — Password enforcement + replication flow:
- Add connectToRemote() with home password verification before remote auth
- Auto-cascade: verify home password → register on remote → login fallback
- Replace Register/Login tabs with single password field in ConnectedInstances
- Add DifferentPasswordError for typed fallback-login UI transition
- Fallback login form shown only when remote has different password
The env_val() function uses grep which returns exit code 1 when no
match is found. Under set -euo pipefail, this kills the script.
Adding || true prevents this on upgrade installs with older .env files.
The node -e command to set instance name needs to run from
/app/packages/server where pnpm's symlinked node_modules resolve
better-sqlite3, not from /app root.
Redesign deployment as a single docker-compose with Backspace, Caddy
(auto-HTTPS), and LiveKit (voice/video) using hybrid networking:
Backspace+Caddy on isolated bridge, LiveKit on host mode for WebRTC.
- Add install.sh: interactive installer that handles Docker setup,
domain/DNS verification, secret generation, LiveKit config, and
deployment with health-check wait
- Add Caddyfile: static reverse proxy config using Caddy env vars,
routes /livekit/* to host-mode LiveKit via host.docker.internal
- Rewrite docker-compose.yml: all-in-one with profiles (voice),
no external volumes/networks, bind mount ./data for visibility
- Fix livekit.ts: use LIVEKIT_URL env var directly instead of
Host-header derivation that made the env var dead code
- Fix Dockerfile: health check reads $PORT dynamically
- Update .env.example: add DOMAIN, COMPOSE_PROFILES documentation
- Update .gitignore: add livekit.yaml (contains secrets)
Phase 5 of multi-instance federation. Adds a two-layer fix:
Layer 1 — Data ingestion normalization: Remote instance user avatars,
server icons, and attachment filenames are rewritten to absolute URLs
when entering the app (via WebSocket events or API responses), so all
downstream components render them correctly without changes.
Layer 2 — Outbound action routing: wsSend calls (voice join/leave/status,
typing) and file uploads in UI components now route through the correct
instance based on the active channel's origin.
Two fixes addressing architectural review feedback:
1. Snowflake ID collisions: Replace process.pid-based worker ID with a
cryptographically random value (0-1023) generated once at first boot
and persisted to instance_settings.worker_id. Eliminates deterministic
ID collisions between Docker instances that all run as PID 1.
2. Reaction API leak: Revert addReaction/removeReaction signatures to
(messageId, emoji) — the store now resolves the channel internally by
scanning its message cache, keeping routing logic out of the UI layer.
Refactor the WebSocket layer from a singleton connection to a connection
map supporting N concurrent instances. Each connection has its own
heartbeat worker, reconnect state, and token. Stores are now
instance-aware: serverStore merges servers by origin, chatStore routes
API calls through the correct client, and instanceStore triggers WS
connect/disconnect on add/remove. DM, social, and voice events remain
home-only.
Introduce instanceStore (Zustand) with full federation lifecycle:
probe remote instances, register with username collision fallback,
login to existing accounts, sync instance list across all connected
instances, auto-reconnect from cached tokens on login/page load, and
cleanup on logout. Add ConnectedInstances component to User Settings
with home instance card, remote instance management, and inline
add-instance flow (URL probe → register/login → connected).
Refactor singleton api object into a class with constructor-scoped
closures parameterized by baseUrl and getToken. Export backward-
compatible api singleton, createApiClient factory for remote instances,
and new instance.info() and users.verifyPassword() methods for
federation support.
Add multi-instance support foundation: shared federation types
(ReplicatedInstance, InstanceInfoResponse, VerifyPasswordRequest),
database schema changes (home_instance, replicated_instances on users,
instance_name on settings), public instance info endpoint, auth
registration with homeInstance and username@domain collision fallback,
password verification endpoint, and replicatedInstances sync on user
profile. Extract duplicated sanitizeUser into shared utility across
8 server files.
