Two separate reasons "Restart to update" only ever showed up after pressing
"check for updates" by hand, and one reason the restart was unpleasant.
1. `update-downloaded` is a one-shot push to whichever page happens to be
loaded. It is dropped when the window is in the tray (mainWindow is null),
when the 10s post-launch check beats the web app's listener registration,
and on every reload. Once an update is staged the poll latches off, so it
was never re-announced — a manual check was the only way back. The main
process already tracks this in recoveryStore, so expose it over IPC and have
the banner ask on mount rather than rely on catching the event live.
2. UpdateBanner was only mounted in the mobile layout. On the desktop app the
visible one was UpdateToast, which duplicated the same "update ready" card
in untranslated English. Mount the banner on desktop too and reduce the
toast to the failure case it does not share.
3. quitAndInstall() defaults to a non-silent install, so on Windows restarting
meant clicking through the NSIS wizard. Pass silent + force-run-after, and
switch the installer to one-click per-user, which is what lets the silent
install proceed without an elevation prompt.
The manual-download link in the failure toast pointed at the upstream GitHub
repository, which is private for this fork and 404'd for everyone. Point it at
the fork's Gitea releases, where the updater feed already lives.
Regression test covers the case the live event never announced; verified by
mutation that removing the status query fails it and nothing else.

Rebrand. The product name is now Resenhacord everywhere a person reads it:
window title, tray, notifications, About panel, PWA manifest, page title,
recovery and instance-picker screens, and the four i18n strings that named
the app. Code identifiers (BackspaceElectronAPI, @backspace/* workspace
names, the federation protocol) are unchanged — they are not a brand, and
renaming them buys nothing but churn. AGPL notices and upstream attribution
stay as they were.
Two rename details that would each have hurt real users:
- electron-builder's productName changed but appId did not. NSIS keys the
installation on appId, so the updater replaces the Backspace install in
place instead of leaving a second app beside it.
- userData is keyed on app name, so the rename would have moved every
install to an empty profile — logged out, instance URL gone. main.ts now
walks a migration chain ("@backspace/desktop" → "Backspace" →
"Resenhacord"), each step a no-op once its source is gone, and one whose
target already holds data leaves it alone. Autostart lookups accept the
old registry entry name too.
Logo. Two speech bubbles in conversation, violet behind, rose in front with
three dots — the front one is talking. Sources are hand-written SVG in
assets/brand (square viewBox; the gap between bubbles is a mask, not paint,
so the alpha-only macOS template keeps the silhouette). PNG sources are
rendered from the icon SVG and the whole set — .icns, .ico, Linux PNGs, tray
variants, favicons, PWA, maskable — comes from the existing gen-icons
pipeline unchanged.
Pin notice. Pinning a message now posts "X pinned a message to this channel.
See all pinned messages." into the channel, the way Discord does, with two
links: the message itself (jumps to it) and the pins panel. Space messages
had no `type` column — only DM messages carried system events — so this adds
one (migration 0018, default 'user', verified against a copy of the
production database: 88 rows, all 'user'). The route inserts a type='system'
row alongside the pin and broadcasts it as message_created, so the client
renders it with the SystemMessage renderer it already has. Unpinning posts
nothing; it is housekeeping, not news. System notices are excluded from the
notification toast and the message sound — they are not from anyone.
The pins panel and jump target are local state in MainContent; a notice deep
in the timeline reaches them through two small uiStore requests (a counter
and an id), neither persisted.
Verified: web build, 506 web tests (2 new), server typecheck, 804 server
tests, desktop typecheck.

GitHub stays the build machine — it has the Windows runners the native audio
module needs — but the update feed moves to this fork's own Gitea.
The GitHub repository is private, and electron-updater against a private GitHub
repo needs a token inside the shipped app, which is a leaked token. Gitea
serves release assets to anyone, so the installer carries no credential. The
flow was verified end to end against the live instance before writing this:
create release, upload asset, download anonymously.
The release tag is fixed at 'latest' because electron-updater fetches
latest.yml before it knows which version exists, so the URL cannot carry a
version; CI replaces that release's assets each publish. electron-builder runs
with --publish never since it cannot upload to Gitea, but still emits the
latest.yml the updater reads.
Needs a GITEA_TOKEN secret on the GitHub repository.
release.yml already builds and publishes desktop installers for every platform
on a v* tag, so no new workflow was needed — it needed adapting to the fork.
electron-builder published to upstream's repository, so releases (and with them
the electron-updater feed, which had no source at all) went nowhere useful.
More consequential: postinstall ran electron-rebuild against uiohook-napi only.
electron-native-screenshare would have been compiled for Node's ABI rather than
Electron's and failed to load at runtime — and since the loader degrades
quietly by design, the symptom would have been screen sharing with no sound and
no error, which is the exact bug this module exists to fix.
Documented in docs/build-desktop.md, including why the build has to run on
GitHub (Gitea Actions provides no hosted runners, and the module needs MSVC)
and why the Windows runner stays pinned to windows-2022.
win.icon now references the hand-crafted multi-size .ico (16/24/32/48/
64/128/256) rather than letting electron-builder synthesise from a
single 1024 PNG — the latter was the cause of the 'Windows looks low
quality' complaint. linux.icon explicitly references build/icons/ dir
mode (was implicit before).
Add auto-launch settings (start at boot + start minimized) to the
Desktop section in Account settings, using Electron's built-in
setLoginItemSettings API across macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Replace the fallback colored-circle tray icon with proper B logo assets:
template images for macOS (adapts to light/dark menu bar) and colored
icons for Windows/Linux. Fix BGRA channel order bug in fallback generator
and move tray icons to resources/ so they're packaged into the app.
Screen sharing with audio captured the app's own voice playback, causing
users to hear themselves echoed back. Fixed via two layers:
- Add restrictOwnAudio constraint (Chrome 141+/Chromium 144) to exclude
the app's own audio from system audio capture
- Add shareAudio toggle so users can disable system audio entirely
- Remove outdated macOS audio block (now supported via ScreenCaptureKit)
- Upgrade Electron 33→40 (Chromium 130→144) so restrictOwnAudio works
natively in the desktop app
- Add NSAudioCaptureUsageDescription for macOS 14.2+ audio capture
- Add GTK 3 fallback for Linux GNOME compatibility (Electron 36+)
Use titleBarStyle: 'hidden' + titleBarOverlay on Win/Linux to remove the
ugly native title bar and menu bar while keeping OS-rendered min/max/close
buttons. Hidden Edit menu preserves keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+C/V/X/Z/A).
Title bar drag region and separator line rendered via web frontend, with
colors matching the Aether Drift design system.
Also adds electron-builder metadata (description, author, homepage,
artifactName) and multi-size icons for cross-platform builds.
Point prebuild script at the 1024x1024 master icon.png at project root.
electron-builder auto-generates .icns (macOS), .ico (Windows), and
multi-size PNGs (Linux) from build/icon.png during packaging.
- Custom screen share picker for Electron (ScreenSharePicker.tsx) with
Aether Drift design: glass-bubble footer, adaptive grid, pill tabs,
border-based selection (avoids overflow clipping), hover brightness
- Instance URL picker so Electron connects to any Backspace server
- System audio loopback on Windows/Linux via desktopCapturer callback
- macOS: video-only callback (OS blocks system audio capture)
- IPC bridge for screen source enumeration and selection
- Purge stale service worker caches on Electron launch
- Dev/prod URL auto-detection (Vite 5173 in dev, server 3000 in prod)
- Typed IPC bridge via preload (notifications, badge, window controls, updates, deep links)
- Native OS notifications via NotificationController with window focus suppression
- Auto-update via electron-updater with UpdateToast UI
- Deep linking (backspace:// protocol) for macOS and Windows/Linux
- Window state persistence (position, size, maximize across restarts)
- Tray icon with graceful fallback when icon asset missing
- Suppress PWA service worker polling/reloads inside Electron
- Platform detection layer (isElectron, getElectronAPI)
- Root workspace scripts (dev:desktop, build:desktop)
- Document BACKSPACE_URL and BACKSPACE_UPDATE_URL env vars
- Add Backspace-design-prototype.html: finalized "Aether Drift" design
language with warm matte surfaces and subtle frosted glass accents
- Update CLAUDE.md with DESIGN SYSTEM section and remove Discord clone references
- Rename all Opencord references to Backspace across the full codebase
- Archive outdated design experiments and Discord-specific assets
- Add science-backed accessibility fallback (prefers-reduced-transparency)
