Four fixes addressing the full state management problem:
1. Passive ready handler: no longer auto-connects to LiveKit on
page refresh. Prevents identity conflicts when the same user
has multiple sessions fighting for one LiveKit identity slot.
The user must re-accept to join; state is shown but not acted on.
2. SoundController sync guard: incomingCallLoading/outgoingCallLoading
refs prevent multiple playSound calls during async audio load.
If call is cancelled while sound loads, stops it immediately on
completion. Eliminates the "5 ringtones at once" bug.
3. Host dm_call_accepted broadcasts now include federatedCallId so
all clients (including remote instances) can match the event.
4. Removed all diagnostic console.log statements.
Root cause: sendToFederatedCallUsers used sendToDmMembers when dmChannelId
was set, which broadcast to ALL DM members including the caller's replicated
stub. The caller's multi-instance WS received dm_call_accepted with the
REMOTE instance's dmChannelId, causing token request for a non-existent
channel (403) and preventing the caller from connecting.
Fix 1: sendToFederatedCallUsers always uses ringedUserIds (exact recipients)
instead of sendToDmMembers (all members including caller stub).
Fix 2: dm_call_accepted handler only sets activeDmCall if the client is the
caller (wasOutgoingCall) or already connected to LiveKit. Other instances of
the same user just clear ringing without entering stuck "Connecting..." state.
1. Accept/reject/end from remote instance now resolves federatedId
to local dmChannelId via DB lookup, so the host can find its
VoiceRoom when the event arrives with only a federatedCallId.
Previously silently failed with "No active call" error.
2. Batch all dm_call_incoming state updates into a single
useVoiceStore.setState() call. Prevents SoundController from
starting multiple ringtone instances (async playSound guard
race when 4 separate set() calls each triggered the subscription).
3. Always overwrite callOrigin/federatedCallId (with null if absent)
on dm_call_incoming. Prevents stale values from a previous
federated call routing local accepts to the wrong instance.
When a federated user first accesses DMs on a remote instance,
all channels appear unread because no read_states rows exist.
Seed missing read states to the latest message during the ready
payload build. The S2S relay keeps things in sync going forward.
Queue read_state_update events when users ack DM messages on
channels with a federatedId. Translates local message IDs to
federation coordinates using sourceInstance/sourceMessageId.
Aligns the ready payload query with the GET /api/dm approach:
get MAX(created_at) per channel first, then fetch the actual
message rows. Avoids issues with federated relay messages whose
local snowflake IDs don't match chronological order.
sendTypingRelay() mirrors sendCallRelay() — direct POST to peers,
no outbox, no retry. Uses federatedId for cross-instance channel
identification. Wired into handleDmTypingStart() for typing_start
and broadcastDmMessage() for typing_stop.
Broadcasts dm_typing_stop to DM members before dm_message_created,
so the typing indicator clears immediately when a message arrives
instead of lingering for up to 3 seconds after delivery.
- Resolve homeUserId from DB in sendFederatedCallStart/End (not raw userId)
- Clear existing timeout in createFederatedCall before overwriting
- Clear federatedCallToken/Url in leaveVoice and handleForceDisconnect
- Remove unnecessary `as any` cast in relay processor
Prevent malicious peers from forging events attributed to users on other
instances. Every relay event processor now verifies the acting user's
homeInstance (from payload) matches X-Federation-Origin (from HMAC-verified
header) via verifyAttribution(), normalized to bare domain.
- Add verifyAttribution() helper using extractDomain normalization
- Guard all 13 event processors before any user resolution or DB writes
- Add homeInstance to FederationRelayReaction type + outbound payloads
- Replace unnormalized string equality in friend handlers
- Log mismatched values on rejection for debugging
The buildReadyPayload query fetched all dm_members rows without
checking the closed flag, causing closed DMs to reappear on every
page reload. The REST endpoint GET /api/dm already filtered correctly.
Federated relay messages can have local snowflake IDs that don't match
chronological (createdAt) order — a message sent earlier on a remote
instance can arrive later and get a higher local ID. This caused a
permanent mismatch between the ready event's lastMessage (MAX id) and
the acked message (last in createdAt display order), making federated
DM channels appear unread after every server restart.
- Server: change ready event DM lastMessage query from MAX(id) to
ORDER BY created_at DESC (matching the DM REST API)
- Frontend: change ackChannel to ack MAX(id) among loaded messages
instead of last in display order (consistent with server comparison)
- Fix federated username display fallback in UserDiscoverCard
Replace the hard-delete in the leave handler with a soft-delete (sets
deleted_at timestamp) when the last member leaves a group DM. A new
janitor sweep in the federation worker runs hourly and purges channels
whose grace period has expired, cascading through reactions, embeds,
attachments, messages, members, outbox/mutation-log/file-queue entries,
and finally the channel itself.
All client-facing dm_channels queries now filter on deleted_at IS NULL
to hide soft-deleted channels from the REST API and WebSocket ready
payload.
Resolves canonical messageId (sourceMessageId for replicated messages,
local ID for originated messages) and includes messageHomeInstance so
the receiver can deterministically find the target message regardless
of which instance created it.
Reaction outbox events used reactionId (add) or a composite dedup key
(remove) as the event messageId. The receiver looked up dm_messages by
sourceMessageId = event.messageId, which never matched because it was
searching for a reactionId, not the actual message ID.
Fix: include the actual DM messageId in the reaction payload JSON.
The receiver now uses event.reaction.messageId for the lookup, with
fallback to event.messageId for backward compatibility.
The relay was failing because processCreateEvent relied on the friends
table to discover the DM recipient, but friendships aren't federated
across instances. Also, resolveLocalUser matched deleted replicated
users before active ones.
- Add participants[] to FederationRelayEvent with homeUserId/homeInstance
for all DM channel members
- Add getDmParticipants() helper to look up member identities
- Include participants in outbox payloads (create/update) and sync events
- Rewrite processCreateEvent to resolve participants directly, compute
canonicalDmPairId, and findOrCreateDmChannel — removing the entire
friends-list fallback (60+ lines)
- Fix resolveLocalUser to filter out deleted users (is_deleted = 0)
and prefer the replicated user match when multiple candidates exist
Previously, voice cleanup only happened in finalizeDisconnect after a
5-second grace period, and only when ALL connections closed. If a user
was logged in on multiple devices and closed the one in voice, the
voice state was never cleaned up — creating a permanent ghost in the
channel sidebar.
Now removeConnection checks if the closing socket is the voice-active
one (tracked via voiceWs map) and immediately cleans up voice state,
broadcasts the leave event, and notifies remaining tabs.
Adds device-switch guardrail to handleVoiceJoin: if the user already
has a voice session on a different WebSocket, that old socket receives
a voice_disconnected/displaced event before the new session takes over.
Also binds voiceWs on the caller socket in handleDmCallStart and on
the acceptor socket in handleDmCallAccept.
- Add validateActivities() with full field validation against ACTIVITY_LIMITS
- Add handleActivityUpdate() with showActivity gate and rate limiting
- Enhance handlePresenceUpdate() to include activities in broadcast payload
- Update status cache via connectionManager.setUserStatus() on presence change
- Wire activity_update case into event router switch statement
Add Rich Presence infrastructure to ConnectionManager:
- Four new Maps: userActivities, userShowActivity, userStatuses, lastActivityUpdate
- Public accessors: set/get/clear activities, showActivity, status, rate limit check
- Cleanup in finalizeDisconnect() and forceDisconnectUser()
- Cache showActivity and status from DB at auth time in buildReadyPayload()
- Assemble userActivities snapshot in ready payload with customStatus fallback
- Include activities: [] in offline presence_update broadcast
- Add Activity, ActivityType, ActivityTimestamps, ActivityAssets types to shared types
- Add activity_update client event and activities field on presence_update server event
- Add userActivities to ready payload and showActivity to User/UpdateUserRequest
- Create shared activities.ts with ACTIVITY_LIMITS, ACTIVITY_PRIORITY, getPrimaryActivity
- Add show_activity column to users table (schema + migration)
- Update sanitizeUser with isSelf parameter; only include showActivity for self
- Fix .map(sanitizeUser) calls to use arrow wrapper to prevent index-as-boolean bug
- Mark auth routes (register/login) as isSelf=true since they return own user data
- Fix ?? to || in metadataFetcher.ts to handle empty strings from Cheerio
- Fix stale embeds on message edit: delete old embeds synchronously before
broadcast, then resolve new ones async (all 4 edit paths: REST+WS, msg+DM)
- Revert unrelated MessageList.tsx scroll threshold change (5000 not 150)
- Remove duplicate embed indexes from migrateAddIndexes (kept standalone ones)
Integrate embed infrastructure into the complete message flow:
- messages.ts: batch-fetch embeds in GET, resolve on POST, re-resolve on PATCH
- dm.ts: same pattern for DM messages with isDm=true
- search.ts: include embeds in all 4 search/around endpoints
- events.ts: embed resolution in WS message create/edit for both space and DM
- Fix embedClassifier.ts type errors (regex match undefined → null)
- Add embeds: [] to all inline MessageWithUser/DmMessageWithUser constructions
- Add embeds: [] to chatStore optimistic message
When a user joins a voice channel while already connected from another
tab, the server now sends a 'displaced' reason on voice_disconnected.
The client tears down LiveKit and shows an informational toast.
