instanceStore registers three resolver functions at module load —
setApiForOriginResolver, setUserIdForOriginResolver,
setOriginFromHostnameResolver — whose backing `let` bindings used to
live in spaceStore. When the module graph was entered from
instanceStore (e.g. JoinSpaceModal importing useInstanceStore) the
order became spaceStore → chatStore → useWebSocket → socialStore →
instanceStore (top-level setter call) while spaceStore was still
paused on its line-8 chatStore import, so the backing `let` had not
been reached yet and the setter crashed with
`Cannot access '_getApiForOrigin' before initialization`. This left
InviteModal.test.tsx and JoinSpace.test.tsx unable to even load their
suites once AudioManager was mocked away.
Move the three `let` bindings, their setters, their pure getters, plus
the WS-populated user-ID cache (`_myUserIdByOrigin`, setMyUserIdForOrigin,
getCachedUserIdForOrigin, clearMyUserIdCache) into
`packages/web/src/utils/crossStoreResolvers.ts`. The utility imports
nothing from `./stores/*`, so no back-edge exists. spaceStore re-exports
the public surface for backward compatibility with the many existing
import sites; instanceStore imports the setters directly from the
utility (the in-cycle re-export path does not resolve at module-init
time under vite-ssr, so a direct import is required for the top-level
setter calls).
spaceStore's remaining wrappers (resolveUserOrigin, getLayoutHomeOrigin,
getMyUserIdForOrigin) stay where they are — they combine the utility's
pure lookups with authStore state — but now delegate to the utility.
Also adds the AudioManager mock to InviteModal.test.tsx and
JoinSpace.test.tsx so their suites actually load (same pattern already
used in 5 other test files). Net test-suite result: 127/131 pass (up
from 121/121 — +6 newly unlockable). The 4 remaining JoinSpace
failures are pre-existing stale UI-text assertions (the placeholder was
expanded and the submit button was made disable-when-empty) made
visible by the suite now loading; they're orthogonal to this change
and handed back for a separate triage.
Closes backlog #27.
disconnectInstance and forceRemoveEntry now run
failoverDmOriginsFromDisconnected BEFORE removeInstanceSpaces so any DM
with a connected sibling survives the disconnect via rekey; only DMs
without alternatives are cleared alongside the rest of the instance.
Switched setInstanceStatus to the same static import (dmOriginFailover
lazily reads store state, so no import cycle).
When an instance transitions from 'connected' to 'disconnected' or
'error', fire failoverDmOriginsFromDisconnected for that origin. Dynamic
import preserves the circular-dep-safe resolver pattern used elsewhere
in instanceStore. Fire-and-forget; the failover utility reads fresh
state at call time.
Friends fan-out (loadFriends/loadRequests) now waits for all remote
connections to establish before querying, fixing the empty friends list
when logged into a remote instance as a federated user.
- Add _autoConnectDone wait guard to loadFriends, loadRequests, and
loadFederatedMutuals (same pattern as discoverStore)
- Add concurrency guards to prevent thundering herd from multiple
ready events firing simultaneous fan-outs
- Fix deduplication to use canonical identity (homeUserId ?? id)
instead of id:origin, preventing duplicate entries for the same
user across instances
- Auto-connect to home instance when logged in as a federated user,
with registry entry so it appears in Connections UI
- Allow re-adding error/disconnected instances in probeInstance
Add shared isSelfOrigin() helper that normalizes origins before
comparing to window.location.origin. Fixes auto-connect treating
self-referencing replicatedInstances entries as remote connections,
causing duplicate friends/DMs/data. Also hides self-referencing
entries from the Connections panel UI.
After deleting a federated identity, the server-side user_federation_registry
and users.replicated_instances were not cleaned up, causing "already connected"
errors when trying to re-federate. The deletion endpoint now authoritatively
removes both the registry row and the replicatedInstances entry, and bumps the
LWW timestamp to prevent stale client syncs from re-inserting them.
Also extends the endpoint to accept mode 'leave' (skip S2S, just clean up),
and enables the "Select instances..." scope option in DeleteIdentityDialog.
Add third group for instances the user explicitly disconnected via
the registry. These get a disconnected placeholder with preserved
token for instant reconnect, but no auto-connect on page load.
- disconnectInstance: save cached tokens BEFORE filtering the instance out, so
reconnectInstance can restore disconnected entries from localStorage
- reconnectInstance: if instance is not in active instances array, attempt to
restore it from cached localStorage token before proceeding with reconnect
- reconnectInstance: update registry to unreachable/auth_expired on failure
- forceRemoveEntry: now tears down WS, removes from instances array, purges
token from localStorage, and cleans up space store (was registry-only before)
Task 13: Hook server-to-server peering into connectToRemote (non-fatal)
and add federation API namespace to the client (initiate, peers, revoke).
Task 14: Show a transparency notice in the DM welcome header when the
other user is on a remote instance, informing that messages are stored
on both home instances and are not end-to-end encrypted.
Task 15: Add Federation section to the instance settings General panel
with DM relay toggle, TTL config, and a live peer list with revoke
buttons. Also extends InstanceAdminSettings type and the server settings
route to support federationRelayEnabled / federationRelayTtlDays.
Replace the give-up-after-3-retries path with a persistent background
scheduler: 10 retries every 30s (5 min), then 12 retries every 5 min
(1 hr). Active timers are keyed by origin so rapid password changes
cancel and replace the previous loop. All timers are cleared on logout
via clearPasswordSyncTimers() called from instanceStore.reset().
Add `pendingSyncOrigins: string[]` to InstanceState so components re-render
when pending password-sync flags change. Hydrate from localStorage on
autoConnectAll, clear on reset, and remove the localStorage-only read path
from `hasPendingPasswordSync`.
Guard autoConnectAll against connecting to window.location.origin,
send perspective-correct replicatedInstances lists so remotes never
store self-references, and deduplicate unaccounted spaces in sidebar.
- Add account deletion with tombstone (isDeleted flag), password/username
confirmation, owned-space guard, and full cleanup transaction
- Free deleted usernames by renaming to !deleted:<id> so they can be reused

Federated users (e.g. youruser@nova browsing orbit) could not add
instances via Settings → Connections because connectToRemote assumed
window.location.host was the home instance, producing a double-@ username
like youruser@nova.ddns.net@orbit.ddns.net that failed server
validation. Now derives trueHomeHost/bareUsername/trueHomeUserId from the
user's actual homeInstance fields and branches the auth flow: login-only
with bare username when targeting home, register with correct namespacing
for third-party remotes. Also skips profile sync to home instance since
it's the source of truth.
Space avatars in the mutual spaces tab now use getSpaceGradient() instead of
a flat grey background, matching the sidebar appearance. Mutual friends and
spaces from remote instances show a globe icon with the instance hostname.
Also wires up federated mutuals loading, correct API client routing for
remote user profiles, and the new mutuals utility.
Fix three federation bugs in Space Settings: icon URL was double-wrapped
through home API, upload targeted home instance instead of remote, and
updateSpace used home API client. Also restyle settings panels (User,
Space, Members, Roles, Connected Instances) with consistent section
headers, grouped cards, and improved layout.
- Accept visibility and description fields when creating spaces
- Register creator in connectionManager on space creation for immediate WS broadcasts
- Return per-channel myPermissions and space-level myPermissions from GET /spaces/:id
- Populate permission maps in spaceStore from REST response
- Add reauthenticateInstance flow for tokenless federation placeholders
- Handle expired/missing tokens gracefully in autoConnectAll with visible error state

Use origin-aware user ID resolution for optimistic voice add/remove
instead of always using the home instance ID. Adds getMyUserIdForOrigin
resolver (same pattern as getApiForOrigin) so joinVoiceChannel and
leaveVoice use the correct federated user ID. Also fixes WS reconnect
voice re-registration, invite URL for remote servers, and chatStore
early-load guard for unmapped channels.
- Fix DM welcome header avatar using home identity for correct gradient color
- Register DM channel IDs in channelOriginMap so federated DM operations
(reactions, messages, typing) route to the correct instance
- Pass origin when creating DM channels from friends list and WS events
- Add server discovery/explore page with public server listings
- Add server visibility and description fields
Store the original home snowflake ID (homeUserId) during federation replication
so that avatar gradient colors resolve identically across instances. Previously,
replicated users got new snowflake IDs on each instance, causing different
gradient colors. Now Avatar, UserProfilePopout, VoiceUser, StreamTile, and
VoiceChannel all resolve through homeUserId when available. Includes backfill
logic for existing federated users missing the field.
Add identity.ts with isSelf() and resolveDisplayIdentity() — pure
stateless functions that detect replicated-self using the immutable
(username, homeInstance) composite key. No store lookups, no data
mutation. Fixes wrong avatar gradient and missing edit/delete on
own messages in remote channels.
Also includes: optimistic message dedup fix for cross-instance
messages (content-only matching), federation toast notifications,
Username component with @domain display, invite parser, and
deploy script simplification.
Batch 1 — Bug fixes:
- Fix stale voice state on remote reconnect (clearVoiceUsersForOrigin)
- Fix logout not cleaning remote servers from store
- Fix reply-to asset normalization for remote messages
- Fix HTTPS hardcoded in autoConnectAll (store full origin, legacy fallback)
Batch 2 — Password enforcement + replication flow:
- Add connectToRemote() with home password verification before remote auth
- Auto-cascade: verify home password → register on remote → login fallback
- Replace Register/Login tabs with single password field in ConnectedInstances
- Add DifferentPasswordError for typed fallback-login UI transition
- Fallback login form shown only when remote has different password
Refactor the WebSocket layer from a singleton connection to a connection
map supporting N concurrent instances. Each connection has its own
heartbeat worker, reconnect state, and token. Stores are now
instance-aware: serverStore merges servers by origin, chatStore routes
API calls through the correct client, and instanceStore triggers WS
connect/disconnect on add/remove. DM, social, and voice events remain
home-only.
Introduce instanceStore (Zustand) with full federation lifecycle:
probe remote instances, register with username collision fallback,
login to existing accounts, sync instance list across all connected
instances, auto-reconnect from cached tokens on login/page load, and
cleanup on logout. Add ConnectedInstances component to User Settings
with home instance card, remote instance management, and inline
add-instance flow (URL probe → register/login → connected).
