When a moderator lifted a server mute/deafen, the client was involuntarily
turning on the user's microphone because isMuted/isDeafened conflated user
intent with server enforcement. Now intent (isMuted/isDeafened) is never
mutated by server events. Effective state (intent || serverEnforcement) is
computed at broadcast and hardware time via centralized helpers.
- The client now dynamically resolves the user's federated identity via `getMyUserIdForOrigin` when evaluating incoming `voice_server_muted` and `voice_server_deafened` events. Previously, the client incorrectly compared the remote event's federated `userId` against the local `authStore` home `userId`, causing federated users to silently drop restriction events.
- Client-side mic/deafen toggles (`toggleMic`, `toggleDeafen`) now accurately evaluate the user's origin-specific ID against the restriction sets, preventing federated users from bypassing locks.
- UI state selectors (`VoiceControlBar`, `ChannelSidebar`) now compute `myOriginId` to correctly render the yellow server-lockdown indicators for cross-instance users.
- Replaces global `userId` tracking with `spaceId:userId` composite keys across both backend and frontend, fixing the issue where server-muting a user in one space bled into others.
- Modifies client-side `ready` event hydration to merge voice states per-origin instead of completely overwriting the store, preventing federated connections from wiping out home instance mutes.
- Excludes server voice restrictions from `zustand/persist` so stale client caches don't override the server's authority on reload.
- Fixes React component reactivity by using reactive store selections for `spaceId` instead of imperative `getState()` calls, ensuring UI lockdown indicators accurately reflect the initial websocket handshake.
When a moderator server-deafens a user, the implied mute is server-imposed
and should display amber (not red) everywhere. Updated VoiceControlBar,
ChannelSidebar, VoiceChannel, and VoiceUser to check isServerDeafened
alongside isServerMuted for amber color and cursor-not-allowed state.
Also includes smart mute/deafen toggle logic (Discord-style coupling),
server-side enforcement of mute/deafen bypass, and cleanup of server
voice state on user departure.
Add ban/unban functionality with BansPanel in space settings, voice
moderation context menu (mute/deafen/disconnect), and fix federated
space settings panels to use origin-aware API client. Show domain
indicators for federated members in MembersPanel.
Replace inline Save/Discard/Reset buttons with sticky glass-bubble pills
that float at the bottom of scrollable modal content. Make SpaceSettings
tab sidebar sticky with glass material. Convert RoleEditView "Back to
roles" into a sticky glass pill at the top. UserSettings Log Out + Save
always visible in a glass pill with separator. Also includes floating
position hook and popover/tooltip improvements from prior work.
Replace the unreliable client-side DM dedup loop in populateFromReady with
a creation-time guard (findExistingDmForUser) that checks all instances
before opening a new DM. Guards added to FriendsPage, NewDmModal, and
UserProfilePopout.
Also fixes: corrupted read_states from temp_ optimistic message IDs (server
migration + client-side validation), federation-aware closeDm/addDmMember
API routing, isSelf-based DM member filtering in sidebar/header, and WS
event error isolation.

(reactions, messages, typing) route to the correct instance

Store the original home snowflake ID (homeUserId) during federation replication
so that avatar gradient colors resolve identically across instances. Previously,
replicated users got new snowflake IDs on each instance, causing different
gradient colors. Now Avatar, UserProfilePopout, VoiceUser, StreamTile, and
VoiceChannel all resolve through homeUserId when available. Includes backfill
logic for existing federated users missing the field.
Federated users get a different snowflake ID on remote instances,
causing avatar gradients to mismatch their home identity. Apply
resolveDisplayIdentity/isSelf resolution in VoiceUser, StreamTile,
VoiceChannel sidebar, and MemberSidebar so the current user's avatar
color is consistent across all views.
Move TypingIndicator from document flow (between MessageList and
MessageInput) into MessageInput's outer wrapper using absolute
bottom-full positioning. Fixes indicator being hidden behind the
floating glass input bubble on desktop.
Phase 5 of multi-instance federation. Adds a two-layer fix:
Layer 1 — Data ingestion normalization: Remote instance user avatars,
server icons, and attachment filenames are rewritten to absolute URLs
when entering the app (via WebSocket events or API responses), so all
downstream components render them correctly without changes.
Layer 2 — Outbound action routing: wsSend calls (voice join/leave/status,
typing) and file uploads in UI components now route through the correct
instance based on the active channel's origin.
Root cause fix for all broken CSS variable opacity modifiers. Converted
every hex CSS variable to space-separated RGB channels (e.g. #fda4af →
253 164 175) and updated Tailwind config to use rgb(var(...) / <alpha-value>).
This makes bg-accent-rose/10, border-border-hard/50, etc. work natively
everywhere — no more currentColor fallback. Reverted all previous explicit
rgba() workarounds back to clean Tailwind syntax. Also fixed the voice
connection wifi icon SVG (was bottom-left aligned, now centered).
Server-side: handleReactionAdd/Remove now check dm_messages table when
message isn't found in server messages, enabling DM emoji reactions
via the same unified client event path.
Client-side: replaced all remaining broken opacity modifiers on CSS
variables (border-border-soft/50, bg-accent-rose/10, bg-surface-*/N,
etc.) with explicit rgba values. Tailwind can't decompose var() for
opacity, causing fallback to currentColor. Fixes 16 files across
error boxes, table borders, surface tints, and input separators.
Channel sidebar: subtle bg-surface-elevated highlight with rounded-[6px],
active channel left pill, rose unread dot on right, smaller #/voice icons
(18px), 10px horizontal padding, 24px voice user avatars at 36px indent.
Reaction bubbles: inline styles for background/border colors to bypass
Tailwind opacity modifier failures on hex CSS variables. Both mine (mint
tint) and non-mine states now render visible pill containers reliably.
PiP positioning:
- Replace hardcoded layout constants with dynamic DOM measurement system
- Obstacle elements declare themselves via data-pip-obstacle="left|bottom"
- getPipBounds() queries actual element rects at runtime via getBoundingClientRect
- MutationObserver + ResizeObserver re-clamp PiP when obstacles appear/resize
- PiP reappears after close when navigating away from voice channel

Bug fix:

Avatar fallback gradients were hashed by display name alone when no
user prop was passed, causing the same person to appear in different
colors across messages, replies, member lists, voice panels, etc.
Added userId prop to Avatar and wired it through all 17 call sites
so the gradient always hashes by user ID.
Phase 5: Remove all 54 legacy Discord token definitions from tailwind.config.js,
migrate body classes in index.html to Aether Drift tokens, update ARCHITECTURE_AUDIT.md.
Phase 6: Replace flat purple fallback avatars with deterministic colorful gradients
(mint, sky, lavender, coral, rose, teal, amber) based on user/server ID hash.
Replace Discord logo SVG with Backspace "B" in server strip. Add per-server gradient
icons with hover glow. Update profile popout banner and incoming call modal to match.
Migrate all 10 voice/video components from Discord visual language to
Aether Drift design system. Zero discord-* classes or hardcoded hex
values remain in components/voice/.
Key changes:
- Status indicators use pastel accents: mint (connected/speaking),

Add a server-side instance_settings table (single-row, CHECK(id=1))
that stores admin-configurable streaming bounds: bitrate min/max/step,
allowed resolutions, and allowed framerates.
Backend:
- New instance_settings schema + migrations (is_admin on users, default
settings row, first-registered-user promoted to admin)
- GET/PATCH /api/settings/streaming endpoints with admin-only writes
and full input validation including cross-field checks
Frontend:
- settingsStore fetches limits on WebSocket ready, exposes isAdmin flag
- ScreenShareSettingsPopover reads bounds from store instead of
hardcoded constants, auto-clamps stale localStorage values
- buildScreenShareOptions() clamps bitrate to server limits at build

bitrate range sliders, resolution/framerate toggles, and save/reset
Camera was stuck at 180p because our custom <video> rendering bypassed
LiveKit's adaptive stream observer. Replaced manual srcObject binding
with track.attach()/detach() in VoiceUser, StreamTile, and PictureInPicture
so the SFU receives viewport dimensions and forwards the correct
H.264 simulcast layer.
Screen share VP9 SVC with L3T3 spatial layers failed because hardware
VP9 encoders (NVENC, QSV, VCE) don't support spatial scalability —
Chrome silently degrades to L1T1. Reverted to VP9 single-layer
(simulcast: false, no scalabilityMode). Also targets encodings[length-1]
in applyOverdrive() for correct simulcast layer targeting.
- Add customBitrateKbps to ScreenShareConfig (null = auto matrix lookup)
- Slider in Stream Settings popover: 500 kbps–20 Mbps, step 500 kbps
- "Reset to Auto" clears override back to preset-derived bitrate
- Live updates via existing applyOverdrive() pipeline on active streams
- Persist version 5 → 6 with migration
Replace rigid SCREEN_QUALITY_MAP (6 hardcoded VideoPreset strings) with a
builder function that computes bitrate, degradation preference, and content
hint from three independent axes (height, fps, content mode). Camera is
decoupled onto a fixed 720p30 preset so screen share changes no longer
affect camera quality. New ScreenShareSettingsPopover replaces the old
VideoQualityPopover with pill-style selectors. Store migrated to v5 with
backwards-compatible migration from videoQuality string.
Extract stats polling into useTrackStats hook with per-sender/receiver
stats via RTCRtpSender.getStats(), delta-based FPS (fixes 25fps overwrite
bug with camera+screenshare), and track-to-source matching via LiveKit
TrackPublication identity. ConnectionInfoPopover becomes a pure display
component with Network/Audio/Video sections. Remove soft-launch diagnostic
loop from useLiveKit.
Merge connectDm() into connect() with isDm flag, eliminating ~145 lines
of duplicated LiveKit room setup. DM calls now inherit all event handlers
(SpeakingDetector cleanup, deafen broadcasts, metadata changes). Replace
monolithic DmCallView with shared VoiceGrid + VoiceControlBar components,
making DM calls group-DM-ready with full feature parity.
Camera and LIVE badges in the channel sidebar were only visible to users
who had joined the same LiveKit room. Widen the voice_status WS event
from {isMuted, isDeafened} to {isMuted, isDeafened, isCameraOn, isScreenSharing}
so all server members see camera/screenshare indicators without joining voice.
30s ping/pong keepalive prevents proxy/NAT from killing idle connections.
Reconnect sound now only plays if downtime exceeds 3s, suppressing phantom
audio from brief network blips.
Screen sharing was publishing at h360 (640x360) and never ramping to target
resolution due to stale closure in setTimeout, wrong initial quality anchor,
and 5 competing code paths with inconsistent bitrates.
- Create utils/screenShare.ts as single source of truth for all screen share ops
- Publish at target resolution from the start (not h360 → ramp)
- Read store at call time in timers (eliminates stale closure bug)
- Use maintain-resolution for screen content, maintain-framerate for camera
- Fix OS-level "Stop sharing" not resetting store or restoring AEC
- Enable dynacast for SFU quality signaling
- Reconcile QUALITY_MAP to canonical bitrates across all 7 files
Eliminate double-state architecture (useState → useEffect bridge → store)
that lost speaking events due to React 18 batching. ActiveSpeakersChanged
now writes speakingParticipantIds directly to voiceStore; 200ms poll
catches missed SDK events. Each VoiceUser subscribes to its own identity
via fine-grained selector for minimal re-renders. Also adds connection
quality indicator and ConnectionInfoPopover.
tsc was emitting compiled .js files directly into packages/web/src/
alongside the .tsx source files because noEmit was not set. These
artifacts were never used — Vite compiles from .tsx source directly.
- Add noEmit: true to packages/web/tsconfig.json (tsc = type-check only)
- Delete all 62 orphaned .js files from src/ (-6,129 lines)

Inject @sapphi-red/web-noise-suppressor into AudioManager's input pipeline
as a toggleable AudioWorkletNode. The worklet is loaded lazily on first
enable, then kept alive — toggling bypasses by rewiring the graph without
destroying the WASM instance. Browser NS is forced off when RNNoise is
active to avoid double-processing. InputGain forced to stereo up-mix to
prevent mono-left-only output from the worklet. Also wires Phase 2 output
device routing (setSinkId) into AppLayout/ChannelSidebar.
- syncMic now uses setMicrophoneEnabled(false/true) to mute/unmute the mic
track in-place instead of tearing down and re-publishing via unpublishTrack().
This eliminates WebRTC renegotiation on every mute cycle and preserves the
Web Audio pipeline for future AudioWorklet injection (RNNoise WASM).
- Unify DmCallView mute/deafen with the primary syncMic path — removed direct
setMicrophoneEnabled calls, added missing auto-mute/unmute on deafen toggle.
- Strip redundant applyConstraints from VoiceControls noise suppression toggle
that was hardcoding echoCancellation:true/autoGainControl:true and fighting
AudioManager's constraint pipeline.
- Add WS events: dm_channel_created, dm_channel_closed, friend_removed,
channel_created/updated/deleted, server_updated

Chrome's AEC uses getDisplayMedia audio as a reference signal and
aggressively ducks the microphone even when headphones are used.
This adds a screenShareActive flag to AudioManager that forces
echoCancellation off during screen share, plus Chromium-specific
goog* constraints as belt-and-suspenders.
Add MutationObserver to neutralize LiveKit's re-attached <audio> elements,
mark our keep-alive elements with data-opencord, detach tracks on unsubscribe,
remove dangerous blanket .play(), and soften compressor to transparent limiter.
Streams no longer auto-focus into large view when they start — tiles
stay in the equal-size grid until manually clicked. Audio playback is
moved out of VoiceUser/StreamTile into a new GlobalAudioRenderer
component rendered in AppLayout so it survives channel navigation.
Streams now appear as separate tiles in the voice grid alongside the
user's camera/avatar tile, matching Discord's model. Each stream tile
has independent volume, mute, watch/unwatch controls, quality badges,
and stream attenuation that ducks audio when someone speaks.
Pass audio: true to setScreenShareEnabled so the browser offers the
"Share audio" checkbox. Track ScreenShareAudio from remote participants
and play it through a dedicated audio element with the same volume
pipeline (including boost >100%).
