Remove federated_id from addMissingColumns so it no longer races with
migrateDmChannelsFederatedId on installs that have canonical_pair_id.
Wrap the table rebuild in PRAGMA foreign_keys = OFF/ON with a transaction
so the DROP TABLE succeeds even when dm_members/dm_messages hold FK refs.
Renames dm_channels.canonical_pair_id → federated_id and adds
owner_home_user_id, owner_home_instance, deleted_at columns to support
federated group DMs. Migration handles upgrade from existing installs
(full table rebuild to rename), partial states (ALTER TABLE), and fresh
installs (correct DDL from the start). Backfills federated_id for
existing 1-on-1 DM channels and owner federation identity for group DMs.
SQLite stores self-referencing FK identifiers with quotes (REFERENCES
"dm_messages"), but the migration guard only checked for the unquoted
string. This caused the migration to re-run on every server startup,
which DROP TABLE dm_messages and triggered ON DELETE CASCADE on
attachments.dm_message_id — wiping every DM-linked attachment.
- buildRelayPayload now uses config.domain for local users instead of
empty string, so the relay receiver can resolve the user
- Fixed canonical_pair_id backfill: SQLite NULL || ':' || x = NULL,
so use COALESCE(home_user_id, id) instead of concatenation
Existing 1-on-1 DM channels created before federation had canonical_pair_id = NULL,
causing the relay to create duplicate channels on receipt of a message. On server
startup, migrations now: (1) compute and set canonical_pair_id for all existing
1-on-1 channels using home_user_id (falling back to regular id for local users),
and (2) merge any duplicate channels that share the same canonical_pair_id by
moving all messages, read states, and members into the oldest channel and deleting
the stale duplicate. Both steps are non-fatal and idempotent.
Federation relay was incorrectly defaulting to disabled, requiring
admins to discover a buried settings toggle. Since federation itself
is opt-in (you connect instances manually), relay should be on by
default. Also migrates existing instances from 0 → 1.
Adds column migrations (dm_channels.canonical_pair_id, dm_messages.source_*,
attachments.source_url, instance_settings.federation_relay_*), CREATE TABLE
for federation_peers/outbox/file_queue/mutation_log, partial/filtered indexes,
and an idempotent backfill that seeds the mutation log from existing DM messages.
Also makes migrateDmMessagesReplyToFk and migrateAttachmentsDmMessageFk
column-aware so table recreation preserves any columns added by earlier
migrations (prevents dropping federation columns on upgrade).
Rebuilds the attachments table with ON DELETE CASCADE on dm_message_id.
Dangling records are excluded during copy — their files become standard
disk orphans detectable by the storage janitor. Also updates the raw SQL
in index.ts to include width/height/duration columns for fresh installs.

One-time async migration runs after server is listening — generates 800px
WebP thumbnails for all existing image attachments that lack one. Gated by
a persistent flag in instance_settings so it never re-runs.
Avatars/banners now resize to max 512px/1920px and convert to WebP before
upload (zero server cost). Chat image uploads generate an 800px-wide WebP
thumbnail via Sharp; the feed shows the thumbnail, click opens the full-res
original. Adds lazy loading to avatars. Federation-compatible: remote
instances without this feature fall back gracefully.

Profile and space layout changes on remote instances were being
overwritten by stale data on reconnect. Adds Last-Writer-Wins
timestamps so the client-relay mesh rejects stale writes:
- profile_updated_at column on users table with migration + backfill
- Server LWW guards on PATCH /users/@me and PUT /space-layout
- Bidirectional profileSync: pulls newer remote profiles to home
- LWW layout sync replaces home-authoritative _layoutFromTrueHome flag
- Layout pushes to ALL connected instances in parallel
Remove FK constraint on space_folder_members.space_id so federated
space IDs (which don't exist in the local spaces table) can be added
to folders without silently failing. Add migration to recreate the
table for existing databases and explicit cleanup on space deletion.
Offset drop indicator lines by 3px into the mb-1.5 gap so adjacent
items share one visual position instead of showing two lines.
Extract TransferOwnershipModal (~165 lines) to its own file.
Add user_space_layout table and PUT /api/users/@me/space-layout endpoint
for persisting per-user sidebar ordering. Spaces can be freely reordered
via drag-and-drop, folders created by dragging one space onto another,
and folders auto-dissolve when they have fewer than 2 members. Includes
folder context menu (rename, color, ungroup), collapsed folder mini-grid
icons, multi-tab sync via WebSocket, and localStorage collapse state.
Removes the rigid native/federated split — federated spaces now intermix
freely while keeping their globe badge.
Voice channels already support video/screen share, so the separate video
type was redundant. Adds migration to convert existing video channels.
Also adds border-border-soft to CreateChannel input fields for visibility.
Add avatarColor field to spaces, matching the user avatar color system.
Spaces get a random color on creation and owners can change it in space
settings. The color controls the fallback gradient when no icon is uploaded,
replacing the old deterministic hash-based gradient. Includes full
federation support, explore page, mutual spaces, and color picker in both
create and settings modals.
Enforce lowercase usernames at registration/login, migrate existing
usernames, and fix ownership checks for federated spaces by resolving
user identity per-instance with getMyUserIdForOrigin.

Add avatarColor as a stored, user-selectable field (mint, sky, lavender,
coral, rose, teal, amber). Randomly assigned on registration, changeable

live preview in settings, and banner fallback integration.
Add banner image, accent color, and bio fields to user profiles with
full-stack support: schema migration, API validation (hex color format,
190-char bio limit), sanitizeUser propagation, and new GET /users/:id/mutuals
endpoint. Rewrite AccountPanel with live preview card, avatar/banner upload
via ImageCropModal, 16-preset accent color picker, and bio editor. Enhance
UserProfilePopout with banner display, accent-colored names, bio rendering,
and mutual counts. Add new UserProfileModal with About/Mutual Friends/Mutual
Spaces tabs and friend action buttons.
Remove the unused USE_VOICE_ACTIVITY permission bit (was bit 25) and shift
STREAM to bit 25, DISCONNECT_MEMBERS to bit 26. Add a database migration to
remap stored permission values. Gate camera and screen share buttons in
VoiceControlBar behind canSpeak/canStream, matching VoiceControls behavior.

Server-side: add DB persistence for voice restrictions (schema, migration,

restriction Sets, voice_state_update leave no longer drops amber icons,
toggleMic/toggleDeafen now guard against server restrictions, and force-mute/
deafen uses direct setState instead of fragile toggle calls.
Add ban/unban functionality with BansPanel in space settings, voice
moderation context menu (mute/deafen/disconnect), and fix federated
space settings panels to use origin-aware API client. Show domain
indicators for federated members in MembersPanel.

$client doesn't exist in drizzle-orm 0.33, causing a TypeError and
500 on every /api/servers/explore request. Export the raw better-sqlite3
instance directly from db/index.ts instead.
Replace the unreliable client-side DM dedup loop in populateFromReady with
a creation-time guard (findExistingDmForUser) that checks all instances
before opening a new DM. Guards added to FriendsPage, NewDmModal, and
UserProfilePopout.
Also fixes: corrupted read_states from temp_ optimistic message IDs (server
migration + client-side validation), federation-aware closeDm/addDmMember
API routing, isSelf-based DM member filtering in sidebar/header, and WS
event error isolation.

Store the original home snowflake ID (homeUserId) during federation replication
so that avatar gradient colors resolve identically across instances. Previously,
replicated users got new snowflake IDs on each instance, causing different
gradient colors. Now Avatar, UserProfilePopout, VoiceUser, StreamTile, and
VoiceChannel all resolve through homeUserId when available. Includes backfill
logic for existing federated users missing the field.
