Soundboard: naming a clip used window.prompt, which Electron does not
implement — it returned nothing, the flow aborted in silence, and adding a
sound worked in the browser while doing nothing at all in the desktop app.
Replaced with a two-step field inside the popover, identical in both.
Spotify, three separate defects behind the two symptoms reported:
Out of sync — a 20s poll stacked on the activity store's 5s debounce left
everyone else on the previous track for up to 25s. The next poll is now
scheduled just past the current track's end instead of on a fixed interval,
and a track change bypasses the debounce (it happens once every few minutes;
the debounce exists for chatty producers).
Vanishing — a paused track, and the silent gap Spotify reports between two
songs, both cleared the activity outright. Pausing is now carried as state
rather than absence, and an empty answer is tolerated for 25s before the
block comes down.
Progress bar — timestamps are computed with the server's clock and were drawn
against the viewer's, so any drift displaced the bar; and it kept advancing
after a pause until the next poll. The ready payload now carries server time
so each client can correct its own offset, and the bar freezes when paused.
Tray, native notifications and system audio in screen share were all found
already implemented and wired end to end; recorded in the roadmap rather than
built again.
Soundboard: the trigger travels over the WebSocket and every client in the
call plays the clip locally, instead of mixing it into the presser's
microphone or publishing a LiveKit track. No upstream bandwidth, no media
stack changes, and the clip is not degraded by voice processing.
Fan-out uses a new sendToRoomParticipants rather than sendToRoom: the latter
broadcasts a space room to the whole space, which is right for the presence
the sidebar shows and wrong for anything audible. The cooldown is enforced
server-side — a client-side one only slows down people not trying to abuse it,
and a soundboard is the easiest thing here to turn into a weapon. Playing is
open to anyone in the call; deciding what the buttons are needs MANAGE_SPACE.
Account menu: the name in the user bar had cursor-pointer and no handler, so
the interface was already promising a click that did nothing. Offers profile,
status and copy-id — not the Clips or account switching the reference design
shows, which would be dead UI here.
Call timer: startedAt comes from the server, so a late joiner sees the call's
age rather than their own arrival. Empty space rooms are destroyed already,
which is what makes the next call start from zero — no reset logic needed.
Voice stays get their own table rather than joining the audit log: that table
records points in time, a call is an interval, and pairing join/leave point
events would leave every query guessing at joins whose leave never arrived.
Sessions are opened and closed inside joinRoom/leaveCurrentRoom rather than at
the seven call sites that reach them, so no path can be missed, and
destroyRoom closes them too — it bypasses leaveCurrentRoom and would otherwise
leak open rows.
A restart leaves sessions open with an unknowable end time. They are closed at
startedAt, discarding that time rather than inventing it: crediting the gap
would hand someone hours they never spent, and the numbers are the point.
Mirrors the existing users.status sweep on boot.
Only closed sessions count, so a figure does not move on every refresh. Bars
scale to the leader, not the total — with five people every share of a total
looks identical. Statistics are readable by any member, since they are the
group's own numbers; the audit log, which names who did what, stays on
MANAGE_SPACE.
Voice presence (voiceStates/voiceUserStates/spaceVoiceStates) was only ever
delivered in the WS `ready` payload — i.e. at connect/reload. A user joining a
space mid-session got `member_joined` (no voice data) and a bare space object;
`GET /api/spaces/:id` (the channel-sidebar hydrator) carries no voice state
either. So members already sitting in a voice channel stayed invisible in the
new member's sidebar until a full page reload.
Fix at the systemic root: ConnectionManager.addUserSpace — the single chokepoint
every join path funnels through (invite, public join, join-request approval),
and which is NOT used on reconnect (that path uses setUserSpaces) — now pushes a
scoped `space_voice_state` snapshot to the joining user. The snapshot is built by
a new buildSpaceVoiceState(spaceId, userId) helper that is also the single source
of truth feeding buildReadyPayload (refactored to use it), so the connect-time
and join-time paths can never drift.
Robustness:
- Delivered over the same ordered WebSocket as voice_state_update deltas — no
REST snapshot-vs-event-stream race.
- VIEW_CHANNEL-filtered via computePermissions exactly like `ready`: a joiner is
never told who occupies a voice channel they cannot see.
- Client applies it scoped to the space (utils/voiceStateSync.applySpaceVoiceState):
merges occupants/statuses and rebuilds only that space's restriction keys,
never disturbing voice state in other spaces.
- Skipped when the space has no active voice and no restrictions (e.g. space
creation).
Tests: server helper behavior, the join push, and private-channel exclusion;
client scoped-apply. Specs updated (websocket.md, voice.md, spaces.md).
Three layered bugs all manifesting as "the group name doesn't show / the
placeholder is a 40-character wall of names":
1. **WS ready payload was missing `name`/`icon`.** The handler serialized
DmChannel rows with only `id, federatedId, ownerId, createdAt, members,
lastMessage`. The optional metadata fields were silently dropped, so
the client store never received `dm.name` until a subsequent
`dm_channel_updated` event fired (i.e. only mid-session renames worked,
never the initial render). `ownerHomeUserId`, `ownerHomeInstance`, and
`metadataUpdatedAt` were also missing — added too because federated
routing depends on `ownerHomeInstance` (`getDmOwnerHomeInstance`).
2. **Header surfaces silently dropped `dm.name`.** `MainContent` (desktop
chat header) and `MobileChatScreen` always rendered the joined member
names, even when `dm.name` was set. Five other surfaces (`DmListItem`,
`MobileDmsScreen`, `MessageList` welcome hero, `MobileGroupDmInfo`,
`GroupDmSettings`) honored it correctly, so a renamed group showed
different titles depending on which surface you looked at.
3. **Message-input placeholder rendered joined names.** Once a group
has 4+ members "Message #Alice, Bob, Charlie, Dave" overflows the
textarea and obscures the call-to-action.
Consolidates the display-name logic behind two utilities in
`dmFormatters.ts`:
- `formatDmHeaderName(dm, currentUser)` — `dm.name` verbatim if set,
else joined names (excluding self); falls back to `'Group'` /
`'Direct Message'`. Used by all 5 header surfaces (was inlined
5 different ways).
- `formatDmInputLabel(dm, currentUser)` — `'#<name>'` if set,
`'the group'` for unnamed groups (collapses the unreadable
joined-names form), `'@<partner>'` for 1-on-1.
`MessageInput` accepts an optional `placeholder` prop that bypasses the
default `Message {#|@}<channelName>` derivation; DM call sites use it
to inject the `formatDmInputLabel`-based form. 1-on-1 DMs keep the
canonical-view lookup so replicated aliases still surface the home
account's displayName; the placeholder reuses the canonical `dmName`
so header + placeholder stay aligned even when raw partner ≠ canonical.
13 new unit tests covering `formatDmHeaderName` (8 cases: named, blank,
joined, federated-username base, empty group, 1-on-1, no-displayName,
no-partner) and `formatDmInputLabel` (4 cases: named, unnamed,
whitespace-only, 1-on-1). 365 → 377 web tests, 1053 server tests,
typecheck clean.
Six WS sites that previously broadcast presence_update to spaces only now use
collectProfileBroadcastTargetIds (the same recipient set as user_updated):

Friends with no shared space + DM-only co-members now see each other's
online/offline transitions live, matching user_updated semantics. Federated
stub presence broadcasts (Task B3) use the same helper, so cross-instance
recipients are uniform.
Updates one assertion in social.federated.test.ts that asserted the old
snowflake-style stub username (now realname-based per A1).
New FederationPresenceUpdatePayload + queuePresenceRelay() helper. Five WS
sites now project the native user's status (and optional activities) to all
active peers via the outbox: WS auth-success, finalizeDisconnect,
manual presence_update, activity_update, showActivity-toggle clear.
Outbox-only (no mutation-log entry) — presence is ephemeral; the upcoming
peer-activation hook re-emits a fresh snapshot so peers recovering from
unreachable converge without history replay. No-op for replicated users.
DmLastMessagePreview lacked a `type` field, so the sidebar rendered
`lastMessage.content` verbatim — surfacing JSON like
`{"event":"space_invite",...}` for space invites and member-add events.
Adds `type` to the preview payload (populated server-side from
`dm_messages.type`) and routes all sidebar call sites through a single
`formatDmSidebarPreview` helper that renders human-readable text for
each system event and skips the group `Sender:` prefix on system rows.
Added federation_peers_changed (no-payload signal) broadcast from every
peer state mutation, and federation_approval_request_received when a new
approval request is queued. Client subscribes via onFederationPeersChanged
callback registry. FederationPanel and PendingApprovals debounce-refetch
on any event. sendToAdmins helper broadcasts only to admin users.
The client's direct WS connection to remote instances (via Connections)
delivered DM events independently of S2S peering. Added activePeerOrigins
allowlist to ready payload — all DM event handlers now silently drop
events from non-home origins without an active peer. This prevents
notifications, sounds, previews, typing indicators, calls, and channel
updates from instances where peering was revoked or never established.
sendToFederatedCallUsers sent dm_call_ended/rejected back to the user
who initiated the action. They already disconnected in their click
handler — the redundant event triggered disconnectFn() again, causing
connect and disconnect sounds to play simultaneously.
Added excludeUserId parameter to sendToFederatedCallUsers, used in
handleDmCallEnd and handleDmCallReject Path 2.
Root cause: sendToFederatedCallUsers used sendToDmMembers when dmChannelId
was set, which broadcast to ALL DM members including the caller's replicated
stub. The caller's multi-instance WS received dm_call_accepted with the
REMOTE instance's dmChannelId, causing token request for a non-existent
channel (403) and preventing the caller from connecting.
Fix 1: sendToFederatedCallUsers always uses ringedUserIds (exact recipients)
instead of sendToDmMembers (all members including caller stub).
Fix 2: dm_call_accepted handler only sets activeDmCall if the client is the
caller (wasOutgoingCall) or already connected to LiveKit. Other instances of
the same user just clear ringing without entering stuck "Connecting..." state.
When a federated user first accesses DMs on a remote instance,
all channels appear unread because no read_states rows exist.
Seed missing read states to the latest message during the ready
payload build. The S2S relay keeps things in sync going forward.
Aligns the ready payload query with the GET /api/dm approach:
get MAX(created_at) per channel first, then fetch the actual
message rows. Avoids issues with federated relay messages whose
local snowflake IDs don't match chronological order.
- Resolve homeUserId from DB in sendFederatedCallStart/End (not raw userId)
- Clear existing timeout in createFederatedCall before overwriting
- Clear federatedCallToken/Url in leaveVoice and handleForceDisconnect
- Remove unnecessary `as any` cast in relay processor
The buildReadyPayload query fetched all dm_members rows without
checking the closed flag, causing closed DMs to reappear on every
page reload. The REST endpoint GET /api/dm already filtered correctly.
Federated relay messages can have local snowflake IDs that don't match
chronological (createdAt) order — a message sent earlier on a remote
instance can arrive later and get a higher local ID. This caused a
permanent mismatch between the ready event's lastMessage (MAX id) and
the acked message (last in createdAt display order), making federated
DM channels appear unread after every server restart.
- Server: change ready event DM lastMessage query from MAX(id) to
ORDER BY created_at DESC (matching the DM REST API)
- Frontend: change ackChannel to ack MAX(id) among loaded messages
instead of last in display order (consistent with server comparison)
- Fix federated username display fallback in UserDiscoverCard
Replace the hard-delete in the leave handler with a soft-delete (sets
deleted_at timestamp) when the last member leaves a group DM. A new
janitor sweep in the federation worker runs hourly and purges channels
whose grace period has expired, cascading through reactions, embeds,
attachments, messages, members, outbox/mutation-log/file-queue entries,
and finally the channel itself.
All client-facing dm_channels queries now filter on deleted_at IS NULL
to hide soft-deleted channels from the REST API and WebSocket ready
payload.
Previously, voice cleanup only happened in finalizeDisconnect after a
5-second grace period, and only when ALL connections closed. If a user
was logged in on multiple devices and closed the one in voice, the
voice state was never cleaned up — creating a permanent ghost in the
channel sidebar.
Now removeConnection checks if the closing socket is the voice-active
one (tracked via voiceWs map) and immediately cleans up voice state,
broadcasts the leave event, and notifies remaining tabs.

Profile and space layout changes on remote instances were being
overwritten by stale data on reconnect. Adds Last-Writer-Wins
timestamps so the client-relay mesh rejects stale writes:
- profile_updated_at column on users table with migration + backfill
- Server LWW guards on PATCH /users/@me and PUT /space-layout
- Bidirectional profileSync: pulls newer remote profiles to home
- LWW layout sync replaces home-authoritative _layoutFromTrueHome flag
- Layout pushes to ALL connected instances in parallel
Add user_space_layout table and PUT /api/users/@me/space-layout endpoint
for persisting per-user sidebar ordering. Spaces can be freely reordered
via drag-and-drop, folders created by dragging one space onto another,
and folders auto-dissolve when they have fewer than 2 members. Includes
folder context menu (rename, color, ungroup), collapsed folder mini-grid
icons, multi-tab sync via WebSocket, and localStorage collapse state.
Removes the rigid native/federated split — federated spaces now intermix
freely while keeping their globe badge.
Voice channels already support video/screen share, so the separate video
type was redundant. Adds migration to convert existing video channels.
Also adds border-border-soft to CreateChannel input fields for visibility.
Add avatarColor field to spaces, matching the user avatar color system.
Spaces get a random color on creation and owners can change it in space
settings. The color controls the fallback gradient when no icon is uploaded,
replacing the old deterministic hash-based gradient. Includes full
federation support, explore page, mutual spaces, and color picker in both
create and settings modals.

Add server-side heartbeat using RFC 6455 protocol-level ping/pong frames
to detect abruptly disconnected clients (e.g. PC shutdown without TCP FIN).
Dead connections are terminated within ~65s, triggering the existing
cleanup chain to remove ghost users from voice channels and presence.
Permission changes now take effect immediately without requiring
disconnect/reconnect. Modeled as "permission mute" parallel to
server mute — server recomputes SPEAK for all voice participants
on role/override changes and broadcasts state via WebSocket.
Includes amber UI indicators and mic toggle blocking.
- Replaces global `userId` tracking with `spaceId:userId` composite keys across both backend and frontend, fixing the issue where server-muting a user in one space bled into others.
- Modifies client-side `ready` event hydration to merge voice states per-origin instead of completely overwriting the store, preventing federated connections from wiping out home instance mutes.
- Excludes server voice restrictions from `zustand/persist` so stale client caches don't override the server's authority on reload.
- Fixes React component reactivity by using reactive store selections for `spaceId` instead of imperative `getState()` calls, ensuring UI lockdown indicators accurately reflect the initial websocket handshake.
- Client ready handler now builds restriction Sets atomically in a single
setState call, eliminating intermediate empty-Set state that caused amber
icons to flash rose on reload
- buildReadyPayload queries all voice restrictions from DB across the
user's spaces instead of relying on in-memory state (which is lost on
disconnect timeout)
- voice_join early-return path now re-broadcasts restrictions to the
reconnecting user, covering fast reload where the user is still in the room
Server-side: add DB persistence for voice restrictions (schema, migration,
ready payload, cleanup on leave). Client-side: fix four bugs that wiped or
bypassed server restriction state — leaveVoice() no longer clears global
restriction Sets, voice_state_update leave no longer drops amber icons,
toggleMic/toggleDeafen now guard against server restrictions, and force-mute/
deafen uses direct setState instead of fragile toggle calls.
