MobileChatScreen DM header now applies parseFederatedUsername and
useCanonicalUserView, matching MobileDmsScreen so federated users render
as 'realname' rather than 'realname@domain'.
Mobile Voice & Audio renamed to Voice & Video across MobileSettingsScreen
and MobileYouScreen — parity with desktop's VoicePanel title.
AudioInputSection and VideoSection picker click-outside now listens for
touchstart alongside mousedown so a single tap dismisses on iOS Safari
(which doesn't synthesize mousedown reliably from touch).
AudioOutputSection feature-detects HTMLMediaElement.setSinkId at module
load and returns null on unsupported platforms (notably iOS Safari).
Split into outer gate + inner body to keep Rules of Hooks intact;
VoicePanel's space-y-5 collapses cleanly with no visible hole.
VideoSection 'Stop preview' CTA gets responsive sizing (mobile:
always-visible 44 px tap target; desktop: original hover-reveal pill via
md: prefixes). The preview <video> gains autoPlay so iOS Safari starts
the stream when srcObject is assigned — manual videoEl.play() after an
awaited getUserMedia loses the user-gesture context on iOS and was
silently rejected by .catch(()=>{}), causing the black-preview bug.
voice.md updated for the iOS hide-when-unsupported policy and the
touch-close contract on device pickers.
- Uses shared SectionShell/DropdownItem from ./_shared/SettingsPickerPrimitives
rather than redefining local copies (parity with AudioInputSection).
- supportsSinkId is reactive to AudioContext lifecycle via the audioCtxGen
pattern (bumped by AudioManager.onResumed). Defaults to true and only flips
to false when a real context exists AND lacks setSinkId (Safari < 17), so
the picker is never preemptively hidden when the user opens Settings before
joining voice. AudioManager.setOutputDevice + initContext re-apply path
handles the deferred sinkId binding once the context appears.
- AudioInputSection now subscribes to AudioManager.onResumed and bumps an
audioCtxGen state on each 'running' transition. Mic-level meter and
resolved-default hint effects depend on it, so opening Settings before
joining voice and then joining voice activates the meter without needing
to remount the panel. Footer copy updated to match the new behavior.
- SectionShell and DropdownItem extracted to
settingsPanels/_shared/SettingsPickerPrimitives.tsx so Task 6
(AudioOutputSection) can import them instead of triplicating the markup.
The _shared/ folder keeps these settings-internal primitives out of the
broader ui/ namespace.
- Deliberate scope choice: VideoSection.tsx still has its own DropdownItem
copy. Unifying all three is left to a follow-up; touching VideoSection
here would expand scope beyond the audio-device-ux branch.
Migrates the remaining 5 profile/space upload sites (CreateSpace, AccountPanel
avatar+banner, OverviewPanel icon+banner) to transferStore.startUpload with
tray:false. Space sites pass _instanceOrigin so uploads route to the space's
home instance.
Removes upload/uploadWithProgress from api.uploads (and their private
uploadFile/uploadFileWithProgress helpers); api.uploads.url is preserved for
GET-path URL building. Deletes the server-side POST /api/uploads handler and
the now-unused @fastify/multipart plugin registration. GET /api/uploads/:filename
remains intact.
Voice & Video tab no longer fires getUserMedia on mount. Uses
navigator.permissions.query({name:'camera'}) for state detection,
which is passive (no LED activation). Preview only opens when the
user explicitly clicks the dormant tile or the prompt-state CTA.
In-call mode unchanged (attaches existing LK track, no extra LED).
Spec and plan updated to reflect the corrected design — the
"auto-start preview, no Test Camera toggle" rationale was wrong;
macOS holds the camera LED on for ~2s after release, so any
incidental getUserMedia call (probe, transient mount) flashes the
LED in the user's face even when they aren't on the Voice & Video
panel. Privacy-correct UX: never light the LED without an explicit
user action.
Two-mode preview: in-call attaches to the LiveKit local camera track
(no double-capture); pre-call uses getUserMedia. Modes transition
reactively on isCameraOn changes.
Empty labels fall back to 'Camera N'; duplicate labels are
disambiguated with ' (1)', ' (2)' suffixes by enumeration order.
'No cameras detected' subline appears when enumeration is empty.
- AutoLaunchSettings: remove pre-await state writes; backend response is
now the sole writer to openAtLogin/startMinimized state, eliminating
the flicker caused when optimistic values diverged from OS truth
- Add busy flag across IPC round-trip; both Toggles receive disabled={busy}
- Start-minimized Toggle additionally receives disabled={!openAtLogin},
preventing interaction when it would have no effect
- Toggle.tsx: add optional disabled prop (forwarded to <button disabled>)
with cursor-not-allowed opacity-50 visual feedback; non-breaking for
all existing callers
getGroupDmTargetOrigins() was called after the leaving user's dm_members row
was deleted, causing their instance to be excluded from member_remove and
ownership_transfer relay fan-out if they were the only member from that peer.
Move the target origins and leaving user lookups to before the deletion.
The previous hash (charCodeAt(0)*256 + charCodeAt(1)) only used the
first 2 characters of KeyboardEvent.code strings, causing all Key*
codes (KeyA, KeyB, ..., KeyZ) to collide to the same numeric value.
This made Ctrl+D and Ctrl+M appear as identical bindings (false
conflict) and broke keybind matching in the web fallback.
djb2 hashes the full string, producing unique values for all codes.
Replace one-off inline tab bar in InstancePanel with a reusable
SettingsTabBar that reads from SettingsSectionsContext. Any panel
using tab mode can drop it in with zero configuration.
Polish: proper underline indicator, consistent gap spacing,
negative top margin to sit flush with content area padding.
Renders tab pills (General, Streaming, Storage, Users) at the
top of the content area, matching Discord's Family Center pattern.
Works alongside the sidebar sub-links — both navigate the same tabs.
The continuous scroll was wrong for Instance — its sub-panels are
fundamentally different page types (user table, storage tool, bitrate
matrix, toggles). Revert to conditional rendering.
The hook now supports two modes:
- Scroll mode (default): smooth scroll + IntersectionObserver spy
- Tab mode (onNavigate callback): sidebar sub-links switch tabs
Instance uses tab mode. The scroll-spy infrastructure remains for
future panels that benefit from it (e.g. Account sections).
Also reverts GeneralPanel to sticky save bar since it's on its own
page again with no overlap risk.
- Section headings: text-lg with descriptions, dividers spaced my-10
- GeneralPanel: convert to auto-save (toggles save immediately,
text fields save on blur) — no more hidden save bar
- StreamingPanel: restore sticky save bar (complex multi-field form
needs explicit save, and it's the only sticky bar now)
Remove `as const` + spread pattern that created a new array on
every render, triggering useLayoutEffect re-registration. Use
typed SettingsSection[] constant instead.
- Task 7: Create activityStore (Zustand) with Map<userId, Activity[]>, showActivity toggle,
debounced pushActivities, and reset on logout
- Task 8: Wire WS integration — presence_update propagates activities to store,
ready payload initializes userActivities and showActivity (via setState to avoid side effects)

Add auto-launch settings (start at boot + start minimized) to the
Desktop section in Account settings, using Electron's built-in
setLoginItemSettings API across macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Replace the fallback colored-circle tray icon with proper B logo assets:
template images for macOS (adapts to light/dark menu bar) and colored
icons for Windows/Linux. Fix BGRA channel order bug in fallback generator
and move tray icons to resources/ so they're packaged into the app.
- Custom screen share picker for Electron (ScreenSharePicker.tsx) with
Aether Drift design: glass-bubble footer, adaptive grid, pill tabs,
border-based selection (avoids overflow clipping), hover brightness
- Instance URL picker so Electron connects to any Backspace server

isValidAssetUrl() was rejecting bare filenames (e.g. "1234567890.webp") which
is the established convention the frontend sends. Now accepts bare filenames
while still blocking path traversal and unsafe schemes.
Also updates client-side password validation to match server's 8-char minimum.

Avatars/banners now resize to max 512px/1920px and convert to WebP before
upload (zero server cost). Chat image uploads generate an 800px-wide WebP
thumbnail via Sharp; the feed shows the thumbnail, click opens the full-res
original. Adds lazy loading to avatars. Federation-compatible: remote
instances without this feature fall back gracefully.
Three changes to bring output volume closer to native apps:
- Insert masterBoost GainNode (+3dB) before the compressor/limiter
- Raise default system sound volume from 0.5 to 0.8
- Add configurable Sound Effects Volume slider (0–200%) in Voice settings
- Add account deletion with tombstone (isDeleted flag), password/username
confirmation, owned-space guard, and full cleanup transaction
- Free deleted usernames by renaming to !deleted:<id> so they can be reused
- Add migration to retroactively free usernames from already-tombstoned users
- Add GET /api/auth/check-username endpoint with rate limiting for real-time
availability checking during registration

Replace element-level opacity on banner fallback divs with rgba-based
gradient color stops via new mutedGradient() utility. This prevents
compositing layer artifacts that caused visible color seams at the
banner boundary in AccountPanel, UserProfilePopout, and UserProfileModal.
Move bg-surface-channel from info section to card wrapper in AccountPanel
so the avatar's negative margin overlaps into the banner correctly. Replace
accent color presets with 7×3 banner color palette, remove accent color
tinting from display names in popout/modal, and refactor gradient entries
to expose from/to hex stops.
Replace the hardcoded 16-color ACCENT_PRESETS array in AccountPanel with
a shared export from gradients.ts that extracts both hex stops from each
avatar gradient, producing 14 harmonized colors in a 7×2 grid.
Add avatarColor as a stored, user-selectable field (mint, sky, lavender,
coral, rose, teal, amber). Randomly assigned on registration, changeable
in profile settings. Existing users keep hash-based fallback until they
choose a color. Includes DB migration, API validation, gradient map,
live preview in settings, and banner fallback integration.
Add banner image, accent color, and bio fields to user profiles with
full-stack support: schema migration, API validation (hex color format,
190-char bio limit), sanitizeUser propagation, and new GET /users/:id/mutuals
endpoint. Rewrite AccountPanel with live preview card, avatar/banner upload
via ImageCropModal, 16-preset accent color picker, and bio editor. Enhance
UserProfilePopout with banner display, accent-colored names, bio rendering,
and mutual counts. Add new UserProfileModal with About/Mutual Friends/Mutual
Spaces tabs and friend action buttons.
Split monolithic UserSettings into AccountPanel, VoicePanel, ConnectionsPanel,
and InstancePanel tabs. Remove standalone InstanceSettings modal. Add reusable
Toggle component fixing size deformation, color inconsistency (green→purple),
and flex-shrink issues. Fix custom status clearing by always sending the field
to the server. Wrap Log Out button in glass bubble. Add subtle card depth with
borders.
